ANSWERS TO YOUR EYELINER QUESTIONS

Eyeliner
Question from Jacklyn

Hi Jacklyn,
Great questions about eye liner. I would first make sure your eye lid is clean and dry. I usually apply and eye shadow primer next and powder over that to cover any imperfections and to keep the lid dry. This should help keep your eye liner on longer, too. If you are not wearing eye shadow and don't want to use a primer, I would still recommend using your face powder over the eye area.  Another idea is to apply your eye liner (which ever you choose) and using an eye shadow liner brush, apply eye shadow over it.  Another idea you might try is using liquid waterproof eye liner.  It's a bit tricky the first time you use it but, the key is not to try to make one solid line all the way across the lid. Rather, start at the outside and slowly make your way across the lid with small overlapping strokes.  Remember to start out thicker and gradually go thinner as you work across. Good luck and I hope one or all of these ideas help you out!

Eyeliner
question from Chelsea

Hi Chelsea,
Great question and yes there is a way to eliminate that white line between eye liner and the color. A common mistake when applying eye liner is to try to make one solid line across the eye. Instead, before you apply the eye liner, use an eye shadow color and an eye shadow smudge brush and apply as close the lash line as possible. Next, using an eye pencil, apply little dots and dashes as close to the lash line as possible. Finally, using your smudge eye liner brush (a small stiff brush that looks like a lip brush but, the bristles are stiffer), smudge them together to form one line.  Another tip: Lift the eye lid up by pulling up just below the eye brow. This will stretch the eye lid and remove any crease that  might be next to the lash line. Hope this helps.

Eyeliner
question from Amy

Hi Amy,
For your coloring, dirty blond hair with greenish, blue eyes you have some great choices for eye liner. If you want to make them look more green, use a purple, copper or khaki.  To make them look more blue, use brown, bronze, mocha, chocolate - any brown based color. (To really make your pop, use a blue or brownish red lipstick - it's amazing how it changes the entire look of your face-it even makes your teeth look whiter!) Good luck and I hope I've helped.

Eyeliner
question from Molly

Hi Molly,
I don't think it's bad to line the rim of your eyes but, just be more careful of sharpening often, keeping the pencils covered and clean, and don't share even w/ your bff and, if there is ANY irritation discontinue immediately and see a doctor. To help keep the eye liner from running, you can try using a waterproof liner and then, just below the lash line, use a powder eye shadow that is light in color like ivory or white or if your skin is darker, a more caramel or bronze color.  You'll need an eye liner smudge brush to apply this so, you can get as close to the lashes as possible. This will also give a smoky look which will make your eyes really stand out. For other great tips, check out our smoky eyes and/or eye shadow pages. Let me know if that helps.

MY QUESTION:

i put eyeliner on the bottom rim of my eyelids (i know you shouldn't but if i put it as near to the eyelashes as possible it looks too thick), but it always, without fail leaks off and smudges down my face making my eyes look incredibly dark and heavy :/
please can you give me some tips and advice on how to stop this and how to outline my eyes to make them the main focus of my face xx

Eye Liner
question from Hoshe

Hi Hoshe,
There are so many different ways to line your eyes and in just about every color you can imagine.  Pencils are probably the most popular and easiest to apply. Just simple put dots and dashes across the lid starting at the outside corner. Then use a smudging eye liner brush to blend them.  You can make the line thick if you have big eyes or thin for smaller eyes. Another method is liquid or cake liner. Liquid liner comes with a brush in the container and a cake liner usually will have one, as well.  If not, purchase an eye liner brush (thin bristles, usually soft) to do the trick. With both liquid and cake the application is the same. Don't try to make one line across the eye. Instead, start at the outside working your way across to the nose, overlapping as you go.  The line should be thicker toward the outside and thin as you get closer to the nose. For the line under the eye, I usually either use a matching pencil color or nothing (very French looking) as the liquid or cake tend to be too harsh. One other great eye liner tool is your eye shadow. You will need an eye smudging brush (looks like a lip brush but, stiffer, shorter natural bristles). Just line the top and bottom with your favorite eye shadow which will give a smoky effect.  Follow up with a thinner line of pencil or liquid to define the eye. The rules for color are pretty simple: If your eyes are light like blue or green, use a darker color like brown, bronze, copper, charcoal or black to define the eye. If your eyes are darker, use black, brown, charcoal for every day neutral look and bright colors like purple, blue, green or gold to brighten up the face. Good luck and I hope that helps.

EYELINER
question from Rachel

Hi Rachel,
To apply liquid eye liner, I think the best way is to start at the outside corner of the eye with your eye liner brush.  Don't try to go all the way across the lid in one stroke.  Instead, start at the outside, draw a little line, then overlapping that line, go over a little bit further and do that all the way across.  It is very difficult to draw one straight line all the way across without having bumps or clumps on your lid. The line should start out thicker at the outside corner, then thinner as you go across.  This may take some practice. You can also do the same for the bottom eye liner but, I'm not crazy about using liquid on the bottom lash line. It looks a little too harsh.  Instead, use a pencil of the same color and smudge it across so the line is a little smoky, or don't do anything at all for that sexy French look! Good luck and I hope that helps.

EYE LINER
question from Ashley

Hi Ashley,
Great question and I think I can help you. All you need to do is get an eye smudge make up brush.  (They look lip a lip brush with short, stiff bristles.)  Use your pencil and begin at the outside corner of the eye working your way across the eye lid with dots or dashes pretty close together and as close to the lash line as possible. Then use the brush to smooth out the dots and dashes, forming a line which will look smoky and classy. You can do this to line the bottom lashes, too. Good luck and I hope that helps.

MY QUESTION:

I use an eyeliner pencil and every time I try to line my top lid it's wavy and too high. It's hard to line it myself cause I can't close my eye well enough to get the liner on my lash line. What is the best way to line my top lid?

EYELINER
question from Brittany

Hi Brittany,
Great question. Eyeliner can be tricky and I'm not a big fan of thick liner at any age. Unless you have a very large eyelid in which case a very smoky, blended liner would be good. If you are wearing eye shadow, you should apply it first. As a teenager, I would stay away from black eye liner since it can look a little harsh and too grown up. Brown is o.k. but there are some great colored liquid liners like green and blue and some mineral eye shadows in every color you can think of that can be worn wet and applied with an eye liner brush. If you are going to do this, the easiest way to apply it is by starting from the outside of the eye lid and work your way toward the inner corner of the eye staying as close as you can to the lash line. Don't try to make one solid line, go slowly and use smaller lines that are connected and keep the line very thin. For the lower lash line, choose a matching pencil or just apply a little mascara. Experimenting is half the fun. The traditional eye pencils are great, too. Just choose a soft pencil. For applying pencil eyeliner, try dabbing little spots of color along the lash line (dashes or dots). Then, use an eye liner blending brush to blend the dashes or dots together. Do this on the upper and lower portions of the eye as close to the lash line as you can get. This leaves a very smoky, classy look. On the bottom lash line, try going just halfway across the eye (outside half) and blending it if you have small eyes or eyes that are close together on your face. This really opens the eye up and doesn't make you look so made up. Remember, don't share pencils or any eye products with anyone, even your BFF because of infections. Hope that helps, Brittany!

EYELINER
question from Ruthie

Hi Ruthie,
The best way to apply liquid eye liner is to begin from the outside of your eye and work your way in.  Don't try to complete one line all the way across as it becomes "wavy" and doesn't look even.  Instead, try to do it in 3 or 4 small strokes. Do the outside first then, take the brush and partially overlap where you left off on the stroke before. Do this all the way across to the inside of your eye by your nose, staying as close to the lash line as possible.  Sometimes, the brushes that come with the product do not work that well. So, look or ask for a good eye liner brush which should be thin with long bristles but, firm to the touch. Thanks for your question.

EYELINER
question from Janique

Hi Janique,
I LOVE eyeliner! Now there is every color you can imagine and many different formulations - like liquid eyeliner, powdered liner sticks and the old stand-by, pencils.  In whatever formulation you choose always start at the outer corner of the eye and work your way across the top to the inside corner by your nose, staying as close as you can to the lash line.  If you are using a pencil, choose a soft pencil and just make dashes or dots across the lid.  Then, using a very stiff short bristle brush (similar to a lip brush) or the smudger that sometimes comes on the other end of the pencil, smudge the dashes and dots.  This will give a very smoky, soft, classy look.  You can then "seal" it with the powdered eyeliner by tracing lightly over the smooth pencil line you've just created.  If you are using a liquid or cake eyeliner, this can be a little tricky and does take some practice.  If it is in cake form, use a little water and mix it with the brush, then do this a couple of times so, the consistency is pretty thick.  For application of either cake or liquid, start at the outer part of the eye and start across the eye lid, getting as close as you can to the lashes.  Don't try to go all the way across in one line. Instead, apply a little, then overlap this part and continue across the lid like this until you have reached the other side.  You can start with a thicker line on the outer part but, by the time you get to the inner part, next to the nose, it should be as thin as possible.  Or, you can make it thin all the way across (this looks really natural but, makes your eyelashes look really thick and full).  For under the eye, I like to use pencil or powder pencils and only go halfway across. (If you are looking straight ahead in the mirror, it will be right under your iris.)  Have fun and try different colors. Even the glitter liquid liners are so cool!

EYELINER
question from Abi

Hi Abi,
If you have large eyes and want to reduce the appearance of them or if they are very wide set you could line the inside top eye under the lashes.  In any case, you would only line the inside quarter part of the top lashes, starting at the nose end of the eye and using a dark pencil like brown, navy or black.  If you have eyes that are close together or they are small and you wish to make them appear larger, use the same technique but apply a white pencil. Be sure to use clean pencils that only you have used and I would recommend sharpening prior to application to reduce the risk of bacteria in the eye itself.  Thanks for writing in and I hope this helps you out!

EYE LINER
question from Amaris

Hi Amaris,
Great question! Liquid liner is the eye accessory for this year.  There are so many colors and even liners with glitter that are just so fun.  The standard black and brown can be very dramatic, too. When using liquid liner, start from the outside corner of the eye and work your way back across the lid, staying as close to the lash line as possible.  Don't try to make one sweeping line across. Instead, use small lines, overlapping them as you move across the eye.  The line should start out thick and as you move across the lid, it should become thinner.  I love wearing a black or brown liquid liner with gold shadow or a pastel shimmery pink with golden shadow is very pretty, too.  Other looks to try: use shades of purple, blue, green shadows then, match them up with a glittery eye liner.  Or use neutral colors of shadows, brown, ivory, taupe with a crazy color of liner.  Have fun and be creative!

EYELINER / MASCARA
question from Shannon

Hi Shannon,
The eyeliner/mascara look is so different from what you usually wear that it just may be that you need to get used to yourself in that look since it's pretty dramatic.  Other ideas you could try are: use another color of liquid liner like maybe a dark purple, or green, or dark brown.  These are great colors with brown eyes.  If you do this look, also choose a good red lipstick.  The eyes are very simple with just the liner/mascara and then the lips are usually a bright red.  If your skin color has yellow in it, use a blue red lipstick. If you have a lot of pink in your skin, use an orange-ish red color.  With brown eyes for a stand out look, try using your neutral colors that you have, then in the outside corners of your eyes apply a small amount of dark purple, navy blue, burgundy or dark green.  Then, use a matching eye pencil or liquid liner. For your lips, choose something more natural like a rosy, brownish color in either a gloss or creme lipstick. This draws the attention to your eyes - "the windows of the soul".  Good luck and let me know if that helps.

Eyeliner
question from Jess

Hi Jess,
O.k., I might be able to help with your eyeliner.  First, get a soft pencil. That means that actual color inside is soft not, hard like a pencil lead that you write with.  Try the testers on the back of your hand and if the line is thin and sharp that's not what you want.  If the line goes on easily and it's thicker, that is what you want to use.  Don't use black especially at your age, it's really tacky looking and if you are going to wear eyeliner at your age, you want to enhance your natural beauty.  So, choose a brownish, copper, steel grey or blue grey, green or purple (but not too dark). Start at the outside corner of your eye and put little dots or dashes as close to the lash line as possible and go all the way across the top.  Then, using a makeup brush that is small and stiff (looks like a lip brush but, stiffer), start on the outside of the eye again and blend the dots/dashes together to form a line.  It will take some practice but, you can do it.  Also, if you are going to line the bottom lashes, only go about halfway across and blend the outside corners like you did the top staying as close to the lashes as possible.  Lastly, don't ever share eyeliners with anyone and sharpen them often to keep them clean.  If you get an eye infection, you have to get rid of all eye products so, be careful not to share. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

EYELINER
question from Carly

Hi Carly,
Maybe it's not the eye liner you need to address.  First, make sure you are using a non-oily eye make up remover and cleansing the area really well. Then, have you tried using a good eye shadow base?  They are specifically designed to help with this problem as well as, give your eye a nice even canvas to put your eye make up on.  Try to find one that has clay in it to absorb the oil.  Let me know if this helps.

Eyeliner
question from Ana

Hi Ana,
I LOVE liquid eye liner, although it does take practice to perfect the look.  I usually start at the outside part of the eye and work my way across. Stay as close to your lashes as possible. Don't try to go all the way across with one solid line.  Instead make a short line, pick up the brush and overlap and repeat this until you've gone all the way across.  As you may have noticed the outside line is thicker and gets thinner as you get closer to your nose. For some real fun and drama, try a different color like teal or even one with glitter. As far as your friend that says it stings, it could be that she is sensitive to some ingredient in the liner.  She should perhaps try a different brand or even use a black pencil.  You may or may not experience the same sensation depending on if you are sensitive.  Also, some of the liquid liners have alcohol in them (for quick drying) and she may be feeling that sensation. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Eyeliner
question from Roxy

Hi Roxy,
Well, my first comment is you should check with a parent or guardian about this.  I'm thinking when you are 12, you really don't need makeup, yet!  Save it for when your natural beauty is needing a little lift!  If you get the approval and you still want to try it, try making small lines from the outside corner of the eye moving overlapping the lines as you go across to the inside part of the eye (closest to the nose) and stay as close to your eye lashes as possible.  Try using other fun colors like purple or glittery ones.  Good luck!

Eyeliner
question from Helena

Hi Helena,
Sure, I would love to suggest some tips to help with your black eye liner.  First, whether you are using a pencil or liquid eye liner, don't try to draw the line all the way across the lid with one stroke.  Instead (if using a pencil), begin at the outside point of the eye and make dashes or dots fairly close together all the way across the lid as close to lash line as possible.  Then, using an eye liner brush (looks like a lip brush but, shorter more stiff bristles) connect the dots by smoothing the liner with the brush.  With a liquid liner, also begin at the outside and stay as close to the lash line as possible. Instead of dots and/or dashes, overlap each stroke as you go across.  In both pencil and liquid, the outside portion is thicker and as you go across, make the line thinner.  Take some practice time before actually wearing it out.

Eyeliner
question from Doreen

Hi Doreen,
Whether or not you've applied enough eye liner really depends on a couple of things. One is the look you are going for and two, the shape and size of your eyes.  If you are going for a soft, smoky look, the line will be thicker and smudged whereas if you are going for a more dramatic look, you may use a thinner line of liquid eye liner.  If your eyes are small and close together you will want a thicker line toward the outside of the eye going thinner as you go across toward the inside.  If you have large eyes, you will want a thicker smudged line all the way across and then a very thin as close to the lashes as possible and of a different color (example: smudged dark brown with black liquid or sharp pencil liner as close to lashes as possible) to make them look more medium sized. If you have average sized eyes, then you would go with a thicker line on the outside moving thinner as you go across.  With blue eyes, you can use brown or black for a more classic look or purples or greens for a more dramatic look.  Hope this helps.

EYE LINER
question from Roseee

Hi Rosee,
Eye liner can be used above the eye next to the top lashes (as close as possible to them) and/or on the bottom under the eye. If you have big eyes and want to minimize them, use eye liner inside the lashes (use clean eye liner, sharpen regularly and don't share with others to minimize the possibility of eye disease or infection) and outside with a thin line as close to the bottom lashes as possible.  With pencil liners, on both top and bottom, start at the outside with a thicker line as you work your way across with dashes and dots, getting thinner as you get closer to the inside next to your nose.  Then smudge the dashes and dots to form a soft classic line.  If you are using liquid liner, just use it on the top and stay as close as possible to the lash line, thicker at the outside and thinner as you go across.  On the bottom, use either a matching pencil or nothing at all (for that sexy French look).
Hope these give you some new tips to work with.
