ANSWERS TO YOUR FOUNDATION QUESTIONS

Foundation
question from Olivia

Hi Olivia,
Great question. I would recommend you try a mineral makeup powder. They also make powder concealers. Start with the concealer, then apply the mineral makeup powder in layers until you've reached your desired coverage. Also, when purchasing make sure you get the primer and the special brushes as it will make the application much easier. I like Bare Escentuals but, there are lots of good ones out there. Good luck and I hope that helps you out.

MY QUESTION:

Hi, i'm having a problem with finding a foundation that's right for me. I have scars along my jaw line, and i cant find a foundation that covers them up, as most make them more red and apparent. Most foundations i try don't cover up my spots, any recommendations? Thank you.

Foundation
question from Kelly

Hi Kelly,
For your foundation problem, I would recommend a couple of things. It seems as though you may have very dry skin?  If this is the case, then I would recommend you start addressing the problem with more moisture to the skin.  Drink a lot of water, use a moisturizer for dry skin (creme type day and night) and use a hydrating mask (at least 3 times a week). This will help but, I would also recommend that you use a foundation with a creme consistency.  And finally, this may surprise you but, press powder into the foundation with the pad it comes with.  Then, very gentle, using a powder brush, sweep off the excess. Using powder will set the foundation and give a nice finished look.  Good luck and let me know if this helps.

Foundation
Question from Patti

Hi Patti,
My opinion is that mineral makeup powder doesn't perform as well on dry skin, however, if you have it and want to try using an hydrating mask a couple of times a week to add more moisture to your skin, it's worth it to try. I find that liquid makeup or creme makeup wears better on dry skin types.  I do love the mineral makeup powder in the warmer months, though.  Good luck and I hope that helps.

My Question:

I have "mature" skin ( many wrinkles) which is also very dry in the winter.  I purchased bareMinerals which worked well before the winter season.  Any suggestions on how to keep using this product successfully over the winter.  I do use liberal amounts of moisturizer morning and night

Foundation
Question from Diana
Hi Diana,
Have you tried mineral makeup powder concealor?  The coverage is really natural and can be controlled by applying it in layers. First, apply the primer (usually sold separately, fills in lines and wrinkles, too), then the concealer, and then as many layers of the mineral makeup powder as you need to get the desired coverage. Bare Minerals is really good and has all of these products. Good luck and I hope that helps.
Teresa
My Question:

I have large pores. Is there a concealer that will minimize them?
Thanks!

Foundation
question from Sandra

Hi Sandra,
It sounds like you may have sensitive oily/combination skin. For this I would still recommend the mineral makeup powder foundation. One of the brands I really like is Bare Escentuals i.d. mineral makeup. It is free of talc, oil, waxes, fragrances and other irritants while giving great coverage and an spf of 15. The key to getting rid of the "dots and rocks" in your pores is using the "Prime Time" foundation primer. This fills in large pores, wrinkles and prepares the skin for the foundation. It goes over the moisturizer. The other "tip" is to get the brush for superior application. The finish is matte and natural looking.  Good luck and let me know if that helps.

Foundation
question from Penny

Hi Penny,
There are lots of brands out there but, I like Bare Escentuals.   You should be able to search online and find locations for it.

MY QUESTION:

Im hearing how great mineral makeup is and to buy the primer and brush that comes w/it. My problem is I can find the powders but not the primer. Am I looking at the wrong stores? What stores should I be going to?

Foundation
question from Penny

Hi Penny
No, primer is not the same as concealer when using mineral makeup. There are many brands out there but, I know that Bare Escentuals makes a primer. The primer goes over your moisturizer and then the powder is patted on with a kabuki (short, stubby powder brush). For maximum coverage, layer when you apply the powder and try their concealer under that for any scaring or blemishes.  Thanks for writing in.
Teresa

MY QUESTION:

I recently went looking for the new mineral make ups. I could not find Primer. Is concealer the same thing? I have very bad scars from acne when I was younger and I hear this may help me look good but want to get the right items.

Foundation
question from Desire

Hi Desire,
To get the perfect color of foundation, you will need to test 3 colors on the cheek, go to a natural light and choose the best match. If there isn't a perfect match, try a different brand or mix two together. There are several ways to apply foundation. You can use a sponge (Gives a very finished look but, may absorb product and can leave streaks if not used properly.), a foundation brush (Gives a very professional look but, also may absorb some of the product. Apply by using downward strokes), your fingers (My personal preference for a good coverage and less waste) but, do go over it with a sponge lightly to blend it.), or if you are using a mineral makeup powder, use the special brush sold with the product, and lastly, a dual finish makeup which should be applied with the enclosed sponge or pad and smoothed out for a perfect look. That pretty much does it for applications of foundation. I hope that helps point out your options.

MY QUESTION:

How do I apply my foundation? I also need to know what color would best fit me. I have blond hair, blue eyes, and a circular face.

Foundation
question from Serina

Hi Serina,
For foundation that won't stay on, it usually indicates you have oily or combination/oily skin. The best foundation for that skin type, I find is the mineral makeup powder or a liquid makeup that has clay in it to absorb the oil. If you want to try the mineral makeup powder, make sure that you follow the directions carefully, get the primer and special brush, sometimes sold separately. To get the desired coverage, layer it instead of applying it too thick the first layer. If you choose to use a liquid, make sure it is a matte finish and seal it in by applying a translucent powder. Just pat it on with the pad and brush away any excess with a powder brush. A couple of other suggestions are: Make sure you have a good skin care routine for oily/combination skin including a clay mask (for clarifying/deep cleansing) and exfoliator (to remove dead skin cells which will grab your color and appear to make blotchiness on the skin). Try oil blotting papers which have talc on one side to absorb the oil (use them, as needed, there may be no need to reapply makeup if you use these). Good luck and I hope that helps.

MY QUESTION:

When using foundation I find that i have to redo it every hour as it comes off? What should I do?

Foundation
question from Sophie

Hi Sophie,
Great question. Since you are on medication, please check with your doctor first but, I think you could benefit from mineral makeup powder. It was created for problem skin and most are very gentle, non-irritating, have a natural spf, leave a beautiful matte finish, just to name a few of the benefits. It is a little tricky to apply, so give yourself some time, follow the directions, get the primer and the special brush for best results.

Foundation
question from Nat

Hi Nat,
Good question.  I always apply the cover up or concealer first, then foundation, then powder.  This makes for easier blending and the powder will set the whole look. When using cover up or concealer, apply with a concealer brush or your finger by patting it on. When applying the foundation over it, pat the foundation on lightly with your finger a foundation brush, or makeup sponge. Finally pat on the powder and remove any excess with a large powder brush. This will help the coverage to stay put and no streaks should be apparent with this application. Hope that helps.

MY QUESTION:

Is it better to put on foundation before cover up?

Foundation
question from Jessie

Hi Jessie,
I don't know of anything that will actually shrink pores but, you can minimize the appearance of them by trying a mineral makeup powder foundation. I find that works best for oily, problematic skin types. It was originally created for patients with acne so, most brands are super gentle, have a natural spf, and leave a beautiful matte finish, to mention a few of the features. It's a bit tricky, at first, so be sure to follow the directions carefully, get the recommended primer and special brush sold separately in some brands. For more coverage, simply layer it on rather than applying it too thick the first layer. Good luck and I hope that helps.

Foundation
question from Emma

Hi Emma,
To keep your makeup on longer, try using mineral makeup foundation with a primer. The primer will help keep the makeup in place.  It's easy to touch up if you take it along with you. Just press it on with a powder pad and dust off any excess.  Hope that helps.

FOUNDATION
question from Traci

Hi Traci,
To pick the right color, I usually suggest you pick three colors and apply them to the cheek area, go outside or to a naturally lighted area and see what matches best. If you are between two colors, get them both and mix them before you apply.  If you have good skin like normal combination, choose liquid makeup and finish with a translucent powder. When you apply powder, press it in and brush off any excess with a makeup brush.  If you have really dry skin, go with a cream makeup and again, press in the translucent powder to set the foundation. If you have combination/oily try the mineral makeup powder. This is a beautiful foundation if you tend to be a little or very oily.  Be sure to get the primer and a kabuki brush for easier application.

FOUNDATION
question from Andi

Hi Andi,
Foundation is such a personal item and when you've found one you really like, it's very difficult to change.  If you like the pressed powder foundations, I would just start trying the ones that look closest in color to the Mary Kay one. Then, it's a matter of finding the one that feels and looks good when you apply it. When it comes to foundation, however, it's hard to get exactly the same look and feeling as your favorite one.  You may be better off to scrimp in some other area and keep your MK foundation since you know it works or, use a cheaper brand for everyday and save the MK for special occasions. Good luck and I hope that helps.

MY QUESTION:

I have used Mary Kay pressed powder foundation for years.  I can't really afford it any more and am looking to buy and off the shelf brand.  There are so many out there, how do I find which one is best for me?

FOUNDATION
question from Megan

Hi Megan,
For you, I would definitely, recommend mineral makeup powder.  It was originally created for  people with acne-prone skin.  Everyone loves the fact that most brands are all natural, non-irritating, non-comedigenic (won't clog pores) and have a natural sunscreen to mention a few of the benefits. You can now almost buy them anywhere but, look at the ingredients and get the most pure ingredients you can find.  Also, most come with a primer and a kabuki brush that you purchase separately.  Be sure to get these and take time to practice a bit before you go out.  You are right about needing a moisturizer because your skin does need oil and water so, find a moisturizer that is specifically for oily skin. Some daytime oily/combination skin moisturizers have a special clay in them to absorb oil and give an even more matte look.  Another great product for oily/combination skin is oil blotting papers.  They have a powder on one side that you apply to the face during the day, which absorbs oil. You can follow up with a translucent matte powder or the oil blotters may be all the touch up you need. I hope that helps.
Teresa

MY QUESTION:

So, I am a teenager and am on a budget with buying makeup. I was wondering if you could suggest any products or foundations for extremely oily skin. Within about only an hour my face has turned shiny and by the end of the day the makeup has practically slid off my face. I want to get a natural, shine free look, so if there are any products you could suggest for me and where to get them that would be great!! Also, let me tell you a little about my skin: I am acne prone, but i really don't have much at the moment, i feel like i need a moisturizer since my face tends to get dry (even though it is so oily). Thank you so much!!

FOUNDATION
question from Lili

Hi Lili,
For sensitive skin, I usually recommend a mineral makeup powder. Most brands are non irritating, have a natural sunscreen and very natural looking with pure ingredients.  For best results, get the primer and the kabuki brush that is recommended.  Also, be prepared to try it a few times to get used to the application.  For extra coverage, apply in layers.

FOUNDATION
question from Happy

Hi Happy,
Since I can't see the exact color of your skin, I will suggest, as I always do, that you go and try three colors next to each other on the side of your face below the cheek area.  Go outside to a natural light and see what matches the best. If you can't choose between two colors then, get both and blend them.  Hope that helps.

Foundation
question from Tammy

Hi Tammy,
I have a great solution for your skin.  For foundation, I would try using a mineral makeup powder.  Some companies claim to even help reduce or get rid of the roseacea. Some other benefits that are being claimed are that people are experiencing less irritations, better coverage, and a more natural product to name a few.  They are usually sold with a primer and a special brush. Be sure to purchase these items as it really does simplify the application and gives a really natural matte finish.  Apply an even layer with the brush by "patting" it on and brushing off any excess. Then reapply as many times as you need to cover any blemishes or discolorations.   I usually try to match the skin tone as closely as possible rather than color correcting.  However, if you want to try to make your skin look warmer, you could apply a bit of yellow or green powder over the foundation by patting it on a brushing off any excess. (Apply a small amount and use good quality finely ground powder to avoid looking too "cakey".)  These colors tend to diminish the appearance of redness. For blush, use a natural brownish color (stay away from red/pink).  Let me know how it goes.
Teresa
MY QUESTION:

I have dark brown hair, dark brown eyes and white/pink skin. Might have roseacea. I am 45 years old with minimal wrinkling ('cause I'm fat and that fills in the lines). What color and type of foundation should I be looking for? I wear a medical mask most of the day (I work as a dental hygienist) and people are really really close to me, so I need to look great.

Foundation
question from Leslie

Hi Leslie,
When shopping for foundation color, I tend to match the skin color. This can be done by applying three similar colors and choosing the one that matches best. If any correcting is required there are a couple of options.  One, is to purchase a primer that is white in color.  It will cover any imperfections. Then, apply the foundation to match your skin.  If your skin is oily, acne or roseacea prone, or oily/combination tendencies, choose a mineral makeup.  If you are oily skin and choosing a mineral makeup powder be sure to get the primer and the brush that comes with it.  This will make the application go more smoothly.   If your skin is on the combination/dry or dry side, choose a liquid or cream formula.  Cream will give a heavier coverage. I like using my fingers as this give more control and coverage than a sponge or makeup brush.  Also, look for sunscreen protection of at least 8. Another way to help correct imperfections is to use a colored powder like yellow or green to reduce the appearance of redness and give a nice candle light glow to the skin. For the redness around your eyes, I would use a concealer. Or perhaps after changing your foundation to one that is good for your skin type, this problem may go away as it might be an allergy to the one you're using now. I hope this information is helpful.  Let me know.
Teresa
MY QUESTION:

How do you know what foundation you need, ie: warm, nuetral or cool...when I buy foundation it seems to leave a red looking ring around my eyes, can you help

FOUNDATION
question from Melinda

Hi Melinda,
Great question and relatively easy to repair! The best foundation cannot correct skin care issues. So, time to start with the basics.  Make sure you are cleansing, toning and moisturizing twice daily.  In addition, exfoliate the dead skin cells off at least 2 times a week and use a clay mask to deep cleanse a couple of time a week, as well. Try doing this for a couple of weeks and see if you notice a difference. Many moisturizers contain alpha hydroxy or an ingredient that will help "renew" the skin.  In doing so, you may notice more dead skin cells falling off or naturally exfoliating.  This is not a bad thing but, you may want to use this moisturizer at night so, it is working while you sleep. Another problem could be that you're using the wrong foundation formula for your skin type.  For oily, acne, problem/oily combination, sensitive skin, I usually recommend a mineral powder makeup as they cover well, help with some skin problems, provide a natural spf, to mention a few of the benefits.  (Be sure to get the brush and primer when purchasing as it makes for a more even coverage and better end result.) For dry, combination/dry, I usually stick with a liquid or cream makeup.  If you are using a liquid or cream, make sure to pat powder in to seal the foundation.  Brush off any excess powder with a brush.  Good luck and let me know how it goes.

FOUNDATION
question from Julia

Hi Julia,
You should ask your parents what they will allow first.  Unless, you have really problem skin like acne or some other discolorations, I wouldn't recommend it. Most girls at 14 have beautiful skin naturally and if you wanted to "dress up" a little, maybe a little blush and/or lip gloss will do the trick.  If you do have problem skin and your parents allow you to wear it, I would take a look at some mineral makeup powders.  They are a little tricky to use but, once you get the hang of it, they provide a very natural, not too heavy look.  The tricky part is application.  Definitely get the primer and the recommended brush that the brand recommends. Choosing the right color can be tricky as well.  Try to match your skin as closely as possible.  Allow yourself some time to get the application down and then viola, you'll have a great look!

Foundation
question from Amanda

Hi Amanda,
I have an idea you could try about the foundation problem you are having under your eyes.  First, I want to make sure you are using an eye cream.  Preferably an eye cream with a gel in it.  This way you will be able to use it under the eyes and soften the appearance of the wrinkles and then the foundation shouldn't "crack" where the lines are.  Next, you should use a concealer under the eye but, only toward the inside where coverage is needed not toward the outside where lines and wrinkles are more prevalent. Use a very moist concealer not one that will dry out the area and make the lines more obvious.  Last, blend the foundation over the concealer and pat in powder to seal it all in.  Let me know how it goes.

Foundation
question from Sophie

Hi Sophie,
Great question!  Foundation can be tricky when you are allergic as there are so many ingredients and unless you know what's causing the problem, you can't eliminate the culprit.  So, I would try using a mineral makeup powder.  They are usually all natural and some even have a natural sunscreen.  It was first used in dermatologists offices for sensitive and/or oily skin clients. So, give them a try. Tip:  make sure to buy the primer and the brush that is recommended for best finished look.  Also, to reach the desired coverage, apply in layers.  Give yourself a couple of times to get used to it and let me know how it goes.
Teresa

MY QUESTION:

Foundation
question from Nikole

Hi Nikole,
There are several suggestions I have about your foundation.  First, I want to make sure you are using a good skin care regimen.....cleanse, tone, moisturize - twice a day.  Exfoliate (removes dead skin cells that foundation may be clinging to and causing oily appearance) and use a clay mask to deep cleanse the pores twice a week (on different days).  If you are still having problems, try using an oil free foundation or a mineral makeup powder.  With the mineral makeup powders, make sure to purchase the primer and the brush for best finish and it may take a couple of times of applications for you to get the hang of it.  If you are using liquid oil free, make sure you finish it with a nice translucent powder.  You might want to try oil blotting papers during the day to blot off any excess oil.  Good luck and let me know if that helps.

Foundation
question from Doni

Hi Doni,
There are several choices for makeup and concealer application. First, with the concealer, you can use your finger (which I prefer because you get the maximum coverage with your fingers) or you can use a concealer brush (synthetic or sable hair fibers - some say it is easier to control with a brush).  For foundation, you can choose either a brush, sponge or your fingers.  Again, I prefer fingers because you can have maximum coverage and you don't use as much product.  With a sponge, you can achieve a lighter coverage but, it does tend to soak up some of the product.  The newest application is with a synthetic makeup brush.  This is applied by using downward strokes.  It is more sanitary with a brush but, the coverage is medium and some product is lost.  The brush must be kept clean, as well.  So, bottom line, Doni, is you have to experiment and think about what coverage you would like to end up with.  Good luck and I hope this helps you decide.

MY QUESTION:

what is the best way to apply foundation, cover up and concealer?

Foundation
question from Winnie

Hi Winnie,
For combination or oily skin, I usually recommend that you try a mineral makeup powder.  They are the best for oily skin and have many other benefits like natural sunscreen and they are less irritating for most skin types.  The application is a bit tricky but, if you try it a few times, you can master it.  Also, when you purchase it, make sure you get the brush and primer that is sold with it because it will make the application much easier.  For heavier coverage, just keep layering it until you have the coverage you want. Let me know if that helps.

Foundation
question from Brianna

Dear Brianna,
There is no right or wrong way to apply makeup.  It's a personal choice.  There are however, several options for makeup (foundation) application.  You may want to choose to use your fingers (my personal choice because it's the most coverage and you don't use as much product), or a sponge (gives minimum coverage but, uses a lot of product), or the newest method, a synthetic makeup brush (apply with downward strokes - uses some product but, needs to be kept clean and gives a medium coverage).  So, you have to decide what type of coverage you want for the correct application.  Hope this info helps you out.

MY QUESTION:

How do you apply make up correctly?

Foundation
question from Payton

Hi Payton,
There are a couple of ways to check color before you spend the big bucks.  One is to ask for samples in a couple of different colors that are as close to your skin tone as possible.  Take them home and try them. Another is try the testers, at least two or three colors on your lower jawbone.  Go outside to a natural light and look in a mirror to see what is the best match.  I usually try to match the skin tone as closely as possible. In some cases, you may need to mix your own by getting a couple of colors.  Also, there are some new foundations that change to match your own individual skin tone and some that you "dial up" your color. Tip: Try to match your foundation to the tone on your lower jawbone as there could be many colors on your face and neck but, this is the largest area and your goal with foundation is to even out the tones of the face. For correcting, use powder, not foundation to smooth out any uneven tones. If your skin has some pinkish tones, get a yellowish powder to warm it up a bit.  If you have some yellow in your skin tone, use a more pinkish powder to offset that.  I hope that helps a bit.

Foundation
question from Carol

Hi Carol,
Thanks for writing in!  For skin that has wrinkles, I want to suggest first that you use a good moisurizer twice a day specifically for wrinkles.  I would use a cream makeup which is usually more emollient and will give more moisture to the skin causing the appearance of less wrinkles.  Also, do finish with a translucent powder because this will keep the moisture in.  When you are applying the powder, avoid dragging the pad across the face (this will cause the foundation to be removed and streaked).  Instead, press the pad into the skin and using a powder brush, lightly brush away any excess powder left on the skin.

I am 60+ years old and have not been able to find a foundation that does not accentuate my wrinkles. What do you recommend?

FOUNDATION
question from Shelby

Hi Shelby,
Most people's necks are a very different color than the skin on their face so, don't worry that there is a difference.  To minimize it, you can try matching as closely as possible the natural color on your face and then, use a yellow base powder over the foundation. This will set your foundation and lessen the appearance of pink or red in your face.  Apply the foundation with a makeup sponge or makeup brush for perfect coverage. For maximum coverage, just use your fingertips. Add the powder by pressing it on with the pad and then brush off any excess with a large powder brush.
Teresa
MY QUESTION:

My face is a different color than the rest of my skin. It's pinker than my neck. I think that i probably have some sun damage. I've tried tinted moisturizers and porcelain colored base and foundation but it all makes my face look darker than the rest of my body. Do you have any advice for me?

FOUNDATION
question from Ellie

Hi Ellie,
If your skin is oily/combination, I usually recommend the mineral makeup powder. It is a bit difficult to use in the beginning so, be patient as the results are worth it!  Be sure to use the special primer and the recommended kabuki brush.  For trouble spots with blemishes, you simply apply extra layers of the powder until the desired coverage is achieved. Or some of the brands have specific concealers for covering blemishes.  If the blemishes are very noticeable, try using the concealer first then, follow with the powder foundation. Some of the mineral makeup powders have all natural mineral based ingredients that even have sunscreen and are great for acne or pimple problems.  Thanks for writing in.

FOUNDATION
question from Lisa

Hi Lisa,
You may want to try color correcting with either a liquid "wash" that you can mix with your liquid foundation. There are some great "pink tone" colors that will warm the face without making it look orange.  Also, try using color correcting powders with a pink tone or  green tone to offset the orange tone. After using the color correcting powder or wash with liquid makeup, follow with a translucent powder with more ivory base than beige.  Hope that helps.

MY QUESTION:

Recommendationsfor a foundation? I have very pale skin and anytime I use a foundation I either end up with a face as white as a ghost or one that looks good until you see the line between my face and my neck in which case my face looks orange in comparison to my neck I want my face to blend naturally into my neck color but I also don't want to look like a white-washed fence.

FOUNDATION
question from Karly

Hi Karly,
Generally, with foundation, I use my fingers as it's the best coverage in my opinion.  I usually then, glide lightly over the area around the nose, eyes and jaw line just to make sure it's blended correctly.  To make sure it's working, look at the jaw line and if there's a big difference in color try adjusting the color.  Thanks for writing in!

FOUNDATION
question from Katie

Hi Katie,
I'm glad you're writing in.  Hopefully, I can help!  I'll start by saying some things that you may have already tried but, just in case you haven't.  I think the biggest problem is not your birthmark but, more the oily skin problem.  So, try making sure you are getting enough vegetables, water and protein - or a balanced diet and some good sleep and exercise.  Next, make sure you are using a good skin care regimen (morning and night) that is specifically for oily skin.  Make sure that you are not causing your oil glands to be overactive by trying to dry out the skin to lessen the appearance of oiliness. In other words, your skin needs a good combination of oil and water to be healthy.  Be sure to exfoliate and use a clay mask for deep cleansing (each at least twice a week and not on the same day). I  usually recommend a mineral makeup powder for oily skin.  It's a little tricky at first but, once you get the hang of it, you will love the look.  Be sure to use the primer and brush that is recommended with it.  For your birthmark area, use a concealer first. Then add the mineral makeup with brush by patting it on over the area in layers until the desired coverage is met. Sweep away any excess powder lightly with a powder brush or makeup sponge.  Another item you could try is blotting papers.  They are inexpensive and you just pat the oily areas two or three times per day with the papers which will soak up the excess oil.  If necessary, you could pat on a little more of the foundation powder and since you've blotted the extra oil it shouldn't look thick and cakey. Lastly, if the birthmark really bothers you, you could try cosmetic bleaching creme to lighten it or even see a dermatologist about having it removed.  Let me know if any of this helps.

MY QUESTION:

I have a large dark birthmark on my face. redish. I've tried ALL sorts of foundations and cover ups. I even tried dermablend. I have oily skin so my face gets real shiny within a couple of hours and makes me look gross so I apply MORE makeup on top of the huge amount of makeup I had on before that! and it just keeps getting shiny, every like, hour or so I touch do touch ups. it gets real cakey to the point of showing my birthmark and getting splotchy and shows creases in my chin. I just REALLY need help finding the right cover up for my birthmark. I would REALLY like to just apply a cover up or foundation then some loose powder over it to set it. then not having to touch it up so often! I don't want to keep re applying it every hour like I've been doing for years. I'm too embarrassed to go to a makeup counter so that's out. help!

if you need to know. I use dermablend cover up cream and then true blend pressed powder foundation. and I use the powder foundation A LOT through out the day and it makes me cakey...help. ):

FOUNDATION
question from Zoe

Hi Zoe,
Since there are several types of foundations, I'll explain them and the coverage they give.  The lightest coverage (or most sheer) is a tinted moisturizer.  This can be applied best with your fingers and to get the coverage even, use a makeup sponge wedge.  The next level of coverage (light to medium) is a liquid foundation. I prefer to use my fingers on this one, as well. I find the coverage is better. I do use the sponge afterwards to even out any inconsistencies. You can also apply it with a makeup sponge or brush but, they do absorb some of the product and the coverage is a bit lighter.  For heavier coverage, use a cream or dual finish (looks like powder but, covers like cream makeup).  These are great if you have scaring or lots of patchiness.  If your skin is very dry, use the cream.  For a matte finish the dual finish is great.  If you have oily/combination skin, my favorite is the mineral makeup powder.  You can get more coverage by applying it in layers. With the mineral makeup powder always use the primer and brush recommended for easier application.  Hint: Always use concealer under the eyes and in troubled spots (around the nose area, mouth or any other red, scarred spots) then, follow up with your foundation.  Good luck and I hope that helps.

FOUNDATION
question from Madea

Hi Madea,
Usually if a company discontinues an item it's because they have designed a better one or it wasn't selling.  Have you checked Cover Girl's website to see if they've replaced it with a new formulation?  If not, just go to the nearest department store or pharmacy to see what you can test before you buy.

MY QUESTION:

I need to find a very light tinted moisturizer. I have tried Marcelle, and it doesn't work. Cover girl stopped producing their's which was the only one that worked. Where can I find another one?

FOUNDATION
question from Meghan

Hi Meghan,
There are a couple of things to try.  I am assuming you have oily or combination/oily skin? If so, try using a mineral makeup powder. It gives great coverage and usually doesn't aggravate the skin as they are mostly or all natural (depending on the brand you use). Also, be sure to use the recommended primer and brush for easier application.  Usually the oils your skin produces mixes with the foundation, causing it to look orange.  So, another idea is to try applying powder more often or try blotting papers to blot excess oil in the areas affected.  Hope this helps you out!

MY QUESTION:
I have a many bumps on my face and I can do well with covering it up, but the only problem is that I am pale so when I use the palest shade of makeup from the line it turns orange under my jaw. So it's hard to make this work. HELP please. Can you recommend a certain type of make up that works for pale people?
Thank you,
Meghan
