Hi Sophia, With new makeup users, I always start with the basics. Mainly because you've only got one chance at keeping your skin looking great and your makeup looks incredibly better when you take care of your skin. Get a good skin care routine (cleanse, tone and moisturize) and use it twice a day. If your skin is oily, use only products for oily skin. If your skin is combination oily/normal, normal or normal/dry, use products for normal or combination skin depending on the brand. If you have dry or sensitive skin there are specific products for that as well. Next, choose a good foundation. Again, depending on your skin type, choose the formulation. If your skin is oily, acne, or problematic go with mineral makeup powder. For normal and combination skin, choose a liquid foundation, tinted moisturizer or mousse depending on the desire coverage. For dry and very dry/sensitive skin, try a creme foundation. There are others, too, such as dual finish which is also o.k. for oily/combination skin and gives heavier coverage. For choosing colors with foundation, try three on the side of the cheek, go outside or in a good light, and see which matches the best. Next, choose a powder to seal in the foundation if you are using liquid or creme. Choose the translucent light, medium or dark based on your natural skin tone. Apply powder with the pad it comes with then brush off with a large powder brush any excess. Next, using a blush brush, apply a neutral peach or pink to the apple of your cheeks. Blend with a makeup sponge. For eyes, there are lots of applications so, look in magazines and see what you want to achieve, write back and I'll help you with that, too. Or, just check out our other eye shadow pages. For lips, use a natural lip liner and what ever lipstick, gloss or stain you like. If you need help with colors, check out our "Colors Best For Me" pages or write back with your skin, hair and eye color and I will help you with that, too. Good luck and I hope this helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION: i wanna start to buy make up cause i dont have any and i wanna know what will i need as brush and make up
Makeup question from Cynthia
Hi Cynthia, Did you know that oily skin is a blessing? Right now you may not think so but, you will notice that as your friends with dry skin get older, they will have wrinkles and your skin will age more slowly! At 15, it's a great time to start a skin care routine to keep you skin looking it's best then, any makeup you add will look much more classy. So, get a good cleanser, toner and moisturizer (matte for oily skin) and use it twice a day. An exfoliater will remove dead skin cells that tend to make the skin look splotchy and uneven when wearing foundation or powder. A clarifying mask will deep cleanse and keep the skin looking fresh. Use these two products on different days and at least twice a week. OK, now that we've got the basics out of the way, let's have some fun with makeup. For your foundation, I would try a mineral makeup powder. It's natural, clean and really gives a nice matte look without looking too cakey. I like Bare Minerals but, be sure to get the primer and the special brush because they make the application much easier. For your eyes, I would go with a nice teal or purple eye liner to brighten up the brown eyes. If you're not comfortable with bright colors, use a dark brown, unless your skin is very dark, then use black or charcoal. To apply eye liner, start at the outside and work your way across the eye making little dots and dashes with your pencil. Next, using an eye liner brush (looks like a lip brush but, has shorter, more stiff bristles) smudge the liner to form a line. This gives a soft smoky line rather than a harsh, hard line. Finish with lots of black mascara and a nice berry colored lip gloss and blush. Voila! Let me know if this has helped you. Thanks for writing in. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have really big brown eyes. I was wondering what eye makeup i should use? like eyeliner? or eyeshadow?I am African American, I have oily skin and I'm 15. I was wondering also if I should wear foundation? or can I just wear powder?
Makeup question from Annie
Hi Annie, For your coloring, I would recommend a trio eye shadow kit with ivory or white, charcoal or black and a lighter grey. Check out the "Smoky Eyes" page for application and use a black or charcoal eye liner. If you prefer a more dramatic party look, you could wear one bright color like teal or bright green just over the eye lid - not too thick. Finish with a black eye liquid liner. This can be tricky if you are not used to wearing eye makeup so, allow yourself a couple of days for practice before wearing it out. (Also, check out our store on our home page for the Smokin' Hot Diva kit, everything you need for a classic smoky eye look) For lips, I would recommend red or magenta and for blush, a nice neutral bronze or tawny color. Something to brighten your eyes and face. Good luck and I hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i have black hair, ivory skin, and brown eyes i dont usualy wear makeup i need to know what would look good on me and wanted to know if it be a good idea to get a tan or not i want guys to notice me
Makeup Question from Zoe
Hi Zoe, If you want a boy to notice you, the best makeup is a classic, natural look. If you have good skin, just a nice lipstick, blush and mascara will do. If you are having problems with break outs, etc., I would first start with a really good skin care routine. Make sure you cleanse, tone and moisturize twice a day. If your skin is in good condition, all makeup looks better and stays on better. Good luck and I hope that helps. Teresa
My Question:
im going on a trip on thursday but i cant think of makeup to wear because i really like this boy and i want him to notice me help please?
Makeup question from Jamie
Hi Jamie, For the highlighter under the brow, just choose a white eye shadow with lots of shimmer and only apply it just under the brow. Smooth it out with a makeup wedge sponge so, that it's not too thick and cake like. Make sure to blend it in with the next color under that with the sponge or an eye shadow blending brush, also. For the all over face shimmer (oh so fun!) there are a lot of cool products to use. Try looking for an all over face shimmer in the powder form usually a finely ground mica type ingredient or a liquid shimmer that can be added to your foundation. Good luck and I hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Hi, Id like to know of products that give shine to the face, especially the eye shadow part(under the brow), is it some kind of base that goes on before the colour. I use highlighter on cheeks, nose, but I don't think that works all over the entire face, Id like a all over shine, if its possible. Many Thanks
Makeup question from Bhumika
Hi Bhumika, For a college student, I would recommend a natural look for daytime - something easy and quick since, you probably don't have much time and you don't need to look like a professional in your classrooms. I would just use a little eye liner, mascara, a tinted moisturizer and/or translucent powder, sheer blush and lip gloss. For events, like dances and parties, go for a more finished look and a more profound foundation that covers better and gives a more complete look. Finish your eyes more with eye shadow and eye liner, eye brow pencil and mascara. Add a blush, lip liner and lipstick for a really pretty look. Check out our "Colors Best For Me" pages for some ideas with your particular coloring or write back with a specific question. I hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I was wondering how much or what makeup would be appropriate for a college student. How formal or casual should I be?
Makeup question from Kim
Hi Kim, To apply makeup properly, always start with a good skin care routine, get plenty of sleep, exercise, good diet and water. Once you have that down, I recommend you start with a concealer for under the eyes (if there is discoloration or puffiness, otherwise skip this step), a primer for the shadow (this step can be skipped, too but, if there is discoloration or your shadow tends to fade or flake, I would suggest using it). Next is foundation and it really depends on the skin type you have, your desired coverage and finish. Check our foundation pages for descriptions and ideas or write back with a more specific question about this. Next, I usually apply powder to the entire face, even over the eyes to even out the look. Next, eye shadow and again, there are many different variances you can use so, try the eye shadow pages or write back with a specific question about eyes. I usually match the lipstick and blush, somewhat. In other words, if you are using a bronze blush, use lipsticks or lip glosses that are in that family - peach, beige, bronze, brownish red, tawny red, etc. Again, check the "Colors Best For Me" pages or write in with a more specific question. Thanks for writing in. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Want to know how to apply make-up properly and colours to use
Makeup question from Mike
Hi Mike, What a sweetie pie! I would suggest a "day of beauty" so, that you are not just pointing out the makeup area. Go to a full service hair salon where they usually have a makeup artist on staff that can help. Or, give a gift certificate to a "makeup" only store, where they will talk to her about how to apply makeup as she spends the certificate. If you check back soon, we will have an eye makeup kit with specific instructions on how to apply it. Teresa
MY QUESTION: I've recently entered a relationship with a woman who is sooo precious, but she doesn't particularly know how to use make-up to bring out the beauty in her face. Would you have any suggestions as to how I could get her to someone who could show her without offending her. Her birthday is next month. Perhaps a gift card to somewhere or something like that?
Makeup question from Zoila
Hi Zoila, Well, since you don't have any idea how to put on make up, you will have some fun playing! First, I always recommend good skin care routine to ensure the best canvas to color. Next, concealer under the eyes. Stay mostly to the inside of the eye area to cover any flaws. If you don't have any, don't use it. Next, use an eye shadow primer to keep the shadow in place and cover any discolorations. I apply foundation after these two steps. To choose foundation color, try three on the side of your cheek and pick the one that is closest in color. If you need to mix two to get the perfect color, go for it. Foundations come in many formulations and generally, I use mineral makeup powder with oily, sensitive or problem skin. For normal/combination skin, go for a nice liquid makeup and for very dry skin, a cream works best. A couple of other formulations are tinted moisturizer (if your skin is perfect and you need very little coverage), dual finish (great for normal skin that needs more coverage), just to mention a few. Your next step is powder, unless you have used the mineral makeup powder (then you would skip this step). In choosing powder, you can just use a translucent powder that is light, medium or dark depending on your skin tone. If you want to color correct, use pink to counteract yellow tones, green to counteract any purple or redness. Other colors can be peach to give a candlelight glow or yellow to counteract any pink tones. Apply powder with the pad it comes with by pressing, not dragging it, onto the face. Dragging the pad will remove and/or streak your foundation. Remove any excess with a big powder brush by gently sweeping it off. I usually do the eyes next and for great color ideas and applications, see our eye shadow pages and "Colors Best For Me" pages. Once your eyes are done, move on to blush which should be applied just to the apple of the cheek (the cheek bone). (If you are using a cream blush, apply it before your face powder and powder lightly over it to set it.) Lips are the final step and I usually start with a lip liner depending on the color and the type of lip color used. The liner will help to keep lipstick and lip gloss in place. If you are using a lip stain, you don't have to use a liner but, it's easier to fill in the lines if you do. If you are using a very light color, choose a matching liner. If you are using a darker lip color, use a little darker liner and blend the lipstick or gloss with it so there is no obvious line. If your lips are small, line just outside your natural line and if they are big (unless you want to emphasize them) line just inside the natural line. Obviously, if they are just the right size, go right over the natural line. Apply the lipstick/gloss with a brush and blend the liner and product well. Good luck and have fun! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have no idea how to put make up on.
Makeup question from Madi
Hi Madi, To impress your crush, go with a red lipstick and minimal eye shadow but, use a black liquid liner for a very sexy French look. If your crush is more of a naturalist, then use a more natural palate on the eyes and use a lip gloss instead of lipstick for a less dramatic look. Get to know him by asking what actors and women he thinks are pretty. Chances are they may look similar and it may be a look you can pull off, too. Let me know. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I want to look better to impress my crush. What kind of makeup should I use?
Makeup question from Megan
Hi Megan, Great photo! That makes it easy for me to give some advice. It appears you have beautiful skin so, just make sure to use or continue to use a good skin regimen. (Cleanse, tone, moisturize twice a day. Exfoliate, moisture mask and clarifying mask once per week not on same day.) I would recommend either tinted moisturizer or mineral makeup powder. If you choose to use a tinted moisturizer, cover with a slight veil of translucent powder to keep it on and get a more matte look. For your pretty brown eyes and blond hair, I would recommend a natural eye shadow trio like ivory, medium brown and a darker brown. Apply the ivory from lash to brow, the medium brown goes in the crease of the eye (start from the outside and work your way in toward the nose). The darkest color goes in the outside corner. For eye liner, I would use a purple to brighten up your darker eyes. Another easy look for you, would be to use a bright purple, teal, bright blue, etc. eye shadow and just swipe it across the lid, not too thick as it will look too clownish. Add lots of black mascara and a neutral lipstick and blush. That's a great look! If you are using all neutral colors on the eyes, use a bright red or peachy color lipstick. For an everyday look, use a tawny (brownish rose color) on your lips and blush. Good luck and have fun. Makeup is a blast and can really change and enhance your own natural beauty! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I am 20 years old and don't own any make-up. I would like to start wearing some for special occasions, but I am not sure where to start or what I need to buy because I have never done this before.
MAKEUP question from Angela
Hi Angela, I'm glad you are writing in! I hope I can help you out. I always start with making sure you have a good skin care regimen and use it twice a day. This is essential for getting your "canvas" (your skin) in it's optimum condition. Most importantly, cleansing, toning and moisturizing at night. Next, you have to decide on a foundation option. There are many and I usually decide by skin type and type of coverage desired. If you are lucky enough to have great skin and don't want a lot of coverage, a liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer with translucent powder are perfect. Liquid makeup will give a medium coverage and will probably not cover all of your freckles. I personally look at freckles as kisses from heaven and prefer not to cover entirely them as most times the skin becomes too "cake looking" for the amount of product needed to cover them is thick. Liquid foundation is good for most skin types. If your skin is very dry, use a cream foundation. If you have oily/combination, you may want to try a mineral makeup powder. With mineral makeup powder, you can apply it in layers for the desired coverage. (This option may be better at covering your freckles, but if your skin is dry, it may start to look too dry and show wrinkles, if any.) With liquid, cream or tinted moisturizer, the next step is to "seal in" and "set" the foundation apply a translucent powder by pressing it to the face and "dust" off any excess with a powder brush. For blush with your coloring, (fair, strawberry blond hair), I would use a tawny (a rosy brown color) powder blush. For eye shadow, if you have blue or green eyes, use copper, ivory, bronze, suede, or mocha to really make the eyes look green or blue. I usually suggest you look for a trio eye shadow with light, medium and a darker color. Use the light color from lash to brow. (In your case, for your eye brows, you may want to look for a brow stencil to draw them in or maybe even permanent tattoo to fill them in.) Next, with the medium color of shadow, using an eye shadow brush, and starting at the outside corner of the crease in the eye, apply this color. The darker color should be used at the outer corner of the eye lid. Lastly, I usually blend with a wedge makeup sponge. (I call them erasers, they are a must have for applying makeup.) Next apply a neutral brown eye liner. If your eyes are dark brown or brown, use purple or green eye liner with the neutral shadows. Tie it all together with a neutral tawny lipstick or gloss. Or, for special occasion or dramatic look, use a true red or magenta pink color. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I'm in my 40's and I never learned how to apply makeup I never had it growing up and when I do wear it ( in my opinon I look like a clown) so I don't wear it. I'm fair and have strawberry blond hair and heavily freckled all over my eye brows are so fair you don't see them so I don't do anything with them in so many words I have no idea what to do
MAKEUP question from BJ
Hi BJ, With your color combination, dark brown eyes and strawberry blond hair, I would recommend a classic look using eye shadows like copper, peach (but not too orange), bronze and chocolate. For a splash of color use eye shadows like purple, navy, green burgundy but, only in the corner of the eye or by themselves just swept across the eye lid. Or, you can use these colors of eye liner to really draw attention to your eyes. For dramatic look, check out the smoky eyes pages. For lipstick, go with a peachy red (again not too orange) gloss or lipstick. A burnt sienna red would be beautiful for the holidays and gold eye shadow (only a bit, though). Good luck and I hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have dark brown eyes and strawberry blond hair. I have pretty fair skin, and in my younger years never had a problem with applying makeup. After not applying it for several years, I am returning to my old ways. The only other thing I can think of is that even though Im thirty everyone thinks I'm 20. Any tips for what I should use, now that I am confused with all of the "new" products
MAKEUP question from Patsy
Hi Patsy, That is a really hard question to answer without more details. These are some questions you might want to ask yourself before your next purchase. What are my biggest concerns? (Ex. lines and wrinkles, coverage, dry skin patches, combination oily skin, or blemishes, scars, etc.) How much do I want to spend? (Ex. Some products can be outrageously expensive w/o delivering results so, do your homework if you are going to spend a lot of money). By the same token, there are some that are worth every penny and more....... The main thing, I think, is to find a good skin care regimen and use it twice daily, get plenty of water, rest and exercise. If you are using a line of cosmetics faithfully, you are going to see big results in as little as a week or two. Once your skin is radiant, any makeup you apply will look stunning at whatever age! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
What are the best makeup products for over 60?
MAKEUP question from Rena
Hi Rena, To minimize the long oval shape, try using contour powder in bronze for your medium tan skin tone. Just apply it in the upper corners of your forehead near the hair line. For your eyes, try using either bright teal, neon purple or bright green eye shadow. Sweep it across the lid like a thick eye liner and don't go over the crease area of the eye or it starts to look too clownish. Apply a lot of black mascara. For blush, use a peachy color. For your lipstick color, choose a soft peachy gloss. These colors will be a fun look for school. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have a long oval face shape, large brown eyes, a longer forehead, and a medium tan skin tone. Any makeup looks for the upcoming school year? Please help!?
MAKEUP question from Ame
Hi Ame, Unless you are in a play or on television or some other form of drama, I would not recommend makeup for any 7 or 8 year old. If you have approval from your parents, a small amount of lip gloss is o.k. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
ERM OK SO WHAT MAKE -UP SHOULD YOU WEAR IF YOUR LIKE IN YEAR 7-8 BECAUSE I DONT WEAR ANYTHING AND IM NOT TOO GOOD LOOKING
MAKEUP question from Josie
Hi Josie, For your particular needs, I would recommend you seek the help of your doctor first to see if he/she could recommend either a topical exfoliator or an oral medication that can help with the actual texture of the skin. Next, I would recommend mineral powder makeup as you can apply it layer over layer for great coverage and a natural look. For your eyes, depending on the color, I would recommend a natural classy application. Start with a neutral palate with mostly browns or ivory. This palate looks great on everyone. Start with the lightest color and apply lash to brow. Then, use the medium color in the crease. Lastly, use the darkest color in the outside corner of the eye lid. To really make the eyes pop use the following eye liners by applying them in dots and dashes across the lid and under the eye. Then, using a smudge eye liner brush (looks like a lip brush but, shorter, more stiff bristles) to smudge the line both above and below the eye. If your eyes are blue or light green, try using a brown eye liner. If they are dark brown or greenish brown, use a more colorful eye liner like burgundy or purple (this will highlight any green in the color of the iris). If your eyes are hazel, try using a metal blue, navy, purple or brown eye liner. For a great color of lipstick that looks good on everyone, try magenta. If you are too shy to try a bright color like that, try a gloss with blue pinkish tones. Good luck and I hope this helps you out. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I am transgendered and I need help to achieve a smooth complexion and to develop my eyes for a more feminine look.
MAKEUP question from Stacy
Hi Stacy,
To give your face a glow you have several options. If, when you say "glow" you are thinking a "dewy" or hydrated youthful glow, you should start with a good hydrating moisturizer and if you use a foundation, ask for an oil-based foundation and follow up with little or no face powder. (If you have normal or dry skin, this is a great look. If your skin tends to be naturally oily, this look might not be for you) One idea is to use a tinted-moisturizer. This is a simple and dual purpose moisturizer that will keep your skin moist and give off a healthy and natural look. Another way to achieve a glow is to use a mineral based face powder with a slight shimmer. There are also great blushes and contours in creme form that will give the cheeks a nice glow. Once, again, we have some great products coming that I will be able to give you more specific brand suggestions, so check back soon!
MY QUESTION:
What can i use to make my face have a GLO??
MAKEUP
question from natalie
Hi Natalie, This is a very broad question but, I'll try to answer it as best I can and if you still have more specific questions, try again please! As I always suggest, start with a freshly cleansed skin and apply a moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type. This is one of the most important steps in makeup application because using the right moisturizer can help with oiliness, dryness or even blotching on the skin. It can help with the appearance of lines and wrinkles, too. So, once you've chosen an appropriate moisturizer and skin care products, you are ready to apply color. The first step is under eye concealer. Next, I apply eye shadow base (from eye lash to eye brow). Then, comes foundation - make sure to blend it well with a sponge (for less coverage) or your fingers (for more coverage). I then powder the entire face. This gives a nice "canvas" to work with. You can refer to question #1 for eye shadow application. Continuing with the eyes, after you apply your liner, use a lipstick type brush (short, stiff bristles, approximately 1/4" wide works best), blend the eye liner both above and below the eye so it is soft and smoky not a hard line. Then apply mascara. For blush, find the bone on your cheek that some refer to as the apple. Looking at your face directly in the mirror, draw an imaginary line straight down from the iris of your eye, then another line from the bottom of your nose to the bottom of your ear. Apply the blush starting where these line intersect and working toward the ear and over the "apple". I prefer powder blush but, if you like cream, apply it before your face powder and blend it well with a sponge. Last, apply lip liner and lipstick or lip gloss. I usually use a softer lip liner with matching lip stick or gloss so there's no liner showing after it's blended. Again, if you should need more help, just ask!
MY QUESTION:
Can you please give me some more tips how to wear makeup ??
MAKEUP question from Anna
Hi Anna, Great question. I'm sure a lot of people will want to know the answer to this one! You have identified one of the basic four shapes of a face: round, square, triangle and oval. Some experts think the oval is the most attractive look so, we strive to "create" that shape using contour powders to achieve the oval shape. After you've applied your foundation and powder, think of an oval while looking at your face. Imagine how you can shade it to make your face appear to be oval. You should start using a contour or blush that is a light shade of brown - the darker your skin the darker the contour should be. Some bronzing powders may work for you. With a larger blush brush begin to shade the area just above the temples, next to your hairline around your face continuing down to your jaw line almost to the chin area. (Remember to check the intensity of the color on the back of your hand.) Then, find the apple of your cheek or your cheek bone and follow just below it with the contour going all the way to the hairline. Just contouring these areas will begin to minimize the appearance of your cheeks. Using a lighter blush color, apply to the apple of the cheek bone. For cute cheeks, use a highly mineralized pinkish blush. Voila, you now appear to have the oval shaped face and nicely highlighted cheeks. This may take some practice but I would love to know if you can achieve it with my directions. If not, let me know where you need extra help and I'll get right back to you! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
my problem is i have a very round face i have big cheeks but im not fat how can i make my cheeks look less or make them look cute..?
MAKEUP question from Delilah
Dear Delilah, For a natural and practical look on "normal" days, I like to use a tinted moisturizer if you don't need much coverage. It especially looks great in the summer because it just helps to even out the skin tone and most have a built in sunscreen. If you need more coverage, try a mineral makeup which gives a nice coverage and usually is formulated with more natural ingredients that cause less allergies. I always use powder over the base whether it's tinted moisturizer or foundation just to "set" it. Try putting your powder on with the puff by pressing the puff onto your face, then "sweeping" the excess off with a big powder brush. This really makes a nice canvas to begin to apply color. (Always remember to use concealer and eye shadow base before the foundation or tinted moisturizer.) You can then begin to apply eye shadow using very neutral colors: coppers, bronze or gold (in small amounts can be used for a shimmery summer look) or taupe, cashmere, pale peach or pink, browns, etc. for a more everyday look. (Check out our "eye shadow" page for some great ideas and more specifics.) Then apply your eye brow pencil, eye liner and mascara. Now to make a natural look more glamorous, your choice of lipstick can really make a difference. Some lipsticks are so pretty and full of pigment like a matte bright red or a magenta, they can be worn without much other makeup on the face and still make you look stunning. For a softer but still glamorous look, try a lip gloss - the go-to item of the summer. What ever you choose, use a matching lip liner and blend well so there's no distinct line between liner and lipstick or gloss. This will help your lipstick/gloss stay on better and looks more finished. Don't forget to apply a similar blush to the apple of the cheeks. Thank you for your question and let me know if I've helped. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
What sort of makeup should I put on on normal days to look glamorous but at the same time look natural and practical?
MAKEUP question from Maranda
Dear Maranda,
I always like to start by using an all natural skin care line. This prepares the face for makeup application. I really do believe in "you get what you pay for" with skin care. The higher end brands do seem to perform better and have the technology and research to back their products. As far as makeup goes, I use a lot of different brands. Generally speaking, I like good quality very refined products that don't clog the pores or make you look too made up. If the products are available in a mineral formulation, I will try that first because, they are not damaging to the skin and some dermatologists even say they will help some skin conditions like rosacea. Soon (hopefully by October) we plan to be opening our store and you will be able to get some of them here. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
WHAT ARE THE PRODUCTS BEST SUITED TO YOU?
MAKEUP question from Jenn
Hi Jenn,
The best way to apply makeup to a "chubby" face is to spend the time to contour. This can be a little tricky because you need to determine just the right shade of contour. It should be just a little darker than your natural color. (Some bronzing powders work great for this.) After you've applied your foundation and powder, using a large powder brush, begin application just above the temples at the hairline and follow the hairline down to your chin. For blush, use the contour blush (or bronzing powder) just under the cheek bone, then follow up with a shimmering pastel color just on the apple of the cheek. This will give some contour to the cheek area making the face look less round. In addition, you can play up your eyes and lips to shift the focus to them. Use a bright lip gloss or lipstick with a good lip liner so it stays on better and looks more finished. For the eyes, it depends on the shape and color of your eyes. Check out our eye shadow page to see if any of these work for your eyes or write back to me with another question. I love helping with makeup so, please let me know if any of these techniques worked for you. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i have a chubby face, what can i do with makeup to make it appear smaller?
MAKEUP question from GIGI
Hi Gigi,
Great question! There are several reasons why foundation doesn't stay on. One reason could be that your skin is oily and it slips off. It could be your face is dry and therefore, your skin soaks it up. Or you may need to exfoliate the dead skin cells. In any case, the best beginning for foundation is to begin a good skin care regimen for your skin type. Start with a good cleanser, toner and the proper moisturizer for your skin and be sure to use an exfoliating scrub, deep cleansing mask or clarifying mask one to three times per week, depending on your skin type. (Oily skin, three times per week, etc.) Once, you have begun a good skin care regimen, choose the proper foundation for your skin type. Mineral makeup works well with oily skin, even acne prone skin types. Also, try using blotting papers once during the day to keep oil under control. For normal to dry and dry skin, I recommend a cream or liquid. If you apply the foundation with your fingers, it gives better coverage. Then, pat your powder on to "set" the foundation. Blot any excess powder with a big powder brush avoiding dragging it across the face. Let me know if that helps and stay tuned, we have a wonderful skin care line coming soon! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i have trouble with foundations, none of them stay on long enough. which foundation would you recommend me to use?
MAKEUP question from Mandy
Hi Mandy,
Thanks so much for your question. At your age, I think freckles are adorable! They are kisses from nature on your skin so, I wouldn't want to cover them. If you are self-conscious about the discolorations, use a concealer and brush to "hide" them. Then use a very good tinted moisturizer with a minimum SPF 15 which may help to prevent further discolorations. Next, follow up with a good quality translucent powder so, it won't look like a mask. Powders are what can make a face look too cakey or like a mask so, spend money on a good one to avoid this. If your skin is oily or you want to conceal your freckles and discolorations then, use a good mineral makeup powder. Mineral powder is a little tricky to use so, be sure to get good directions and do get the kabuki brush if you decide to use it. We will have some available here soon and when we do, I'll email you with proper how to use directions.
Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I'm only 15 years old. I have freckles and discoloration in my face. Do you think that using base or formation is inappropriate for someone my age? And what type of base or formation would you recommend to me. I have very light skin. I've tried base before but it gave me a mask look.
MAKEUP question from GIGI
Dear Gigi, Thanks again for writing in and I'm glad we were able to help with your prior question. For "mixed" or combination skin, I like a liquid foundation with a matte finish. If you are looking for a translucent look or minimal coverage, apply with a cosmetic sponge. I prefer a wedge because you can get into the areas around the nose and eye. If you prefer more coverage, use your fingers - just make sure to blend it evenly. Even after I've applied with my fingers, I will use a wedge sponge to blend with my under eye concealer or "patch" other blotchy areas with conceal before adding powder. You may need to use a blotting paper mid-day to absorb any excess oil in your nose/forehead area known as the "T zone". Blotting paper is great as it is usually powdered on one side and as you press it against your face (never drag as you will streak your previously applied makeup), it absorbs oil and restores that freshly made up look. Hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Thanks for answering my question it was alot of help. Actually i started exfoliating my face a week before you had recommended me to. It feels great, but what type of makeup would you suggest i use if i have mixed skin? Cream, matte finish, liquid?
MAKEUP question from Gigi
Hi Gigi, Since I'm not a dermatologist or doctor, I don't know if you are allergic to mineral makeup but, I would discontinue using it. If you can return it, you may consider doing so as some companies will refund your purchase in cases of allergic or negative satisfaction. If you've used other foundations successfully, you may want to continue using them. There are millions of formulations of foundations and although manufacturers and their laboratories do their best to make products hypo-allergenic or allergy-free, there will almost always be a small percentage of people that will react. If you are planning to try a new foundation, I would suggest requesting a sample to try first. Even if your particular color is not available in a sample, at least you will be able to see if the formulation is o.k. for you. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Does it mean I'm allergic to mineral foundation if my face itches and feels tingles like ants walking on my face or is it just that its not my type of makeup?
MAKEUP question from lindsey
Hi Lindsey, That is a very broad question, but I'll try to help and if you need other assistance, just write in again and I'll get right back to you. If you've never applied makeup before and are starting from "ground zero" a good idea is to make sure you have a good skin care regimen....basically, it's cleanse, tone and moisturize with good, all natural products specifically for your skin type. This way, you will begin with a good "canvas". If your skin is in good condition, you may only want to use a tinted moisturizer. If you need more coverage, try using a mineral makeup (liquid or powder). If you are using a sponge to apply your foundation, it will absorb a lot of product and the coverage will be light. If you want more coverage, apply with your fingers. Whether using liquid makeup or tinted moisturizer, you will want to "set" it with powder using a puff. Don't drag the puff across your face as this will streak and remove part of the makeup you've applied. Instead, press the puff with powder on to your face and using a large powder brush, dust off the excess. If you are choosing a powder mineral makeup (a great choice for all skin types, except really dry skin), be sure to get exact directions on how to apply it. It can be worn lightly for a sheer coverage and applied repeatedly for more coverage. Tip: if you have freckles, don't try to cover them, instead use a sheer coverage and let them show through. Next, I would apply blush on the apple of the cheeks. For some great tips on eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara application, visit our other pages. Once, again, please write in again if you need more specific information. Hope this helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i just need help learing how to put it on.
MAKEUP question from Cassie
Hi Cassie, These are some great questions. First, let's talk about choosing the right foundation. I always try at least 2 or 3 different foundations before selecting one that is perfect. You can either ask for samples or try them on at the makeup counter. Just, "stripe" them along the jaw area and wait a few minutes for them to "dry" down a bit. Sometimes, if there is a lot of oil on your skin, it will affect the color so, that's another reason to let them settle a bit. When you see the colors next to each other, you will be able to select the one that's best suited for you. Also, there are several brands out there that actually change to match the color of your skin! If you are trying a powdered mineral makeup, you can still do the "stripe" test. If you have difficulty finding an exact match, try mixing a couple of colors to get the perfect one. (Choose one that is a little darker and one that is a little lighter than your natural tone and blend them on the back of your hand.) Next, let's talk about your cheeks and forehead. For blush, use a contour blush just under the cheek bone and towards the ear. Then, use a lighter matte blush on the cheek bone. (Avoid blushes with glittery or shiny particles will reflect light and make cheeks appear larger. It will also attract attention to an area you are looking to make less prominent.) For your forehead, apply the contour at the hairline to minimize the "large forehead" appearance. For eyes, good colors for your color of eyes are darker browns, steel blue-grey, burgundy, even purple. For some great application techniques, check out our eye shadow page. Lastly, a haircut that compliments your face shape would be hair parted on one side and long sweeping bangs if your chin is rescinding. If your chin is normal or protruding, bangs are good. Let me know if I've helped. Thanks again for writing in. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
how to you find the perfect shade of makeup? I have fat cheeks and and large forhead. Brown to hazel eyes, brown hair, and medium skin. How can i play up my eyes, and tone down my cheek bones? Hair cut that will help too may help.
MAKEUP question from Lindsey
Hi Lindsey,
Great question! There are a few things that could be causing this problem First, make sure you are using a good moisturizer under your foundation. Otherwise, the foundation just gets soaked into the skin leaving a chalky mess on the top layer of your skin especially if your skin is dry. Second, make sure you are exfoliating a couple of times a week to remove any dead skin cells that foundation can grab onto and create a look of patchy dry spots especially around the nose area. Last, a good finely ground powder is key to set the foundation. I've tried lots and this is a good item to spend money on to find the right one. It should feel silky to the touch and when you apply it, press it on your face, then use a big powder brush to brush off any excess. If you are using a mineral powder makeup and you have dry skin, you may want to try a wet foundation. If your skin is oily, mineral powder makeup is perfect but make sure you use the corresponding brush and primer. Hope these tips help you out, Lindsey!

MY QUESTION:
umm i wanna kno how when u put the foundation on it doesnt make ur face look chalkee/...
MAKE UP question from Shawna
Hi Shawna, There are several things to watch out for when trying to achieve a natural look with makeup. If you have perfect skin, go for a tented moisturizer. There is not much coverage but, it will even up the tone. If tented moisturizer is not enough, decide what formulation you do need. There are many choices: liquid mineral, powder mineral, stick, creme, oil-free liquid and on and on. To figure out what is best for you, determine your skin type. If you are oily and/or have a lot of scaring from acne, mineral powder makeup is perfect. Liquid makeup is good for normal/combination skin. Some are emollient enough for dry skin. Creme or stick makeup are good for dry skin that needs a lot of coverage. Next, I would say color is key. The best way to test for color is by choosing several (at least three) different colors and apply them on the side of your cheek. Then go into a well lighted area (outside if you can) and see what matches best. If there are no exact matches, try blending two that are close or try a different brand or formulation. If you get the right formulation and color, you will look more natural. It may take trying several different combinations before landing the perfect one for your skin type and the coverage you may need. Also, remember to check the color periodically, as we tend to change throughout the year. For example, tanning in summer, more pale in winter. Some skin types are also more oily during the summer months. Good luck and I hope that helps you decide what to choose. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
what make up makes u look natural?
MAKEUP question from Kitty
Dear Kitty, Meow! I would definitely play up the eyes for they are the windows to the soul! Right now, it's smoky eyes (see our directions for smoky eyes in our webpage "How to apply eye shadow") and soft lips. Use a nude lipliner and beige lip gloss and you will look great. For a different look during the holidays, play up the lips with a red lipstick and use neutral colors on your eyes. Although the focus is on the lips, red lipstick also brings out the white of your teeth and makes the eyes look sultry, too. You are lucky to be able to choose what feature you want to emphasize, as the cliche goes "if you've got it, flaunt it!" I would pick one of the features at a time, though to avoid looking too made up. Have fun! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i have wide/big brown eyes and full lips with very white teeth which should i make the focal point of my face?
MAKEUP question from Kristina
Hi Kristina, The first step to a really good make up is skin care. Make sure you are drinking lots of water, eating a balanced diet, and cleansing, toning, moisturizing your face and neck each morning and evening with really good skin care. All of these things will help the appearance of your complexion to be at it's best. Once, you have done these things, choose a good brand of foundation. (I always apply the concealer and eye shadow base first.) There are lots of different formulations - liquid (I recommend this for normal/dry skin), creme (dry skin), or powder mineral makeup (for oily/acne prone skin) Try several colors on the side of your cheek to get a good match. I think the best way to apply it is with your fingers (unless you are using the mineral powder formula) but, you may also apply with a sponge (pat it on to avoid streaking) or even brush it on with a makeup brush (be sure to use downward strokes when applying with a brush). If you choose the mineral powder formula, make sure to get the primer and the brush recommended because it really does matter when you apply it. Next, if you are using the liquid or cream foundation, seal it with a very fine translucent face powder. This is going to give you a very nice smooth canvas to work with and your blush, eye shadow and lipstick will look beautiful with the clean look of your makeup. If you should have further questions, write again. Thank you for your inquiry. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i really don't understand how to put on makeup how do u?
GENERAL APPEARANCE question from Beth
Dear Beth, What a great question! There are lots of fun things to try. You could change your hair....different cut, color. Something you've never done before. Get a good referral from a friend whose hair you really like. You could also try a new makeup look - go to any makeup counter with no make up on and see what the make up artist will do! (If you go in with your makeup already on, they tend to stick with similar colors you are comfortable with.) If you've never worn red lipstick, try it! It will really give you confidence and makes your teeth look their whitest and the holidays are great for red! These are just a few suggestions. Let me know what you do! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I feel so boring! What can I do to look fun and fashionable without being over the top?
MAKEUP (general) question from Christine
Hi Christine, That sounds really lovely! I would use the silver on the lid of your eyes and a grey or black on the crease of the eye. Be careful to blend really well for that smokey look. Black eye liner and mascara to finish the look. Since your eyes will be the focus, go easy on the lips. In other words, a gloss that looks good with your coloring and a natural lip liner to help make it look finished. Good luck and have fun at your party! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
my school formal is coming up and i am wearing a white dress with silver accessories. should i go with silver eyeshadow or a different color? what other make-up should i wear? Thank-you for your help :D
MAKEUP question from Brwneyes
Hi Brwneyes, Hmmmm....that's a tricky one but, I could suggest that possibly there are a couple of things to recommend. One is that the foundation and/or moisturizer you are using might be too moist for your skin and/or your skin might be naturally oily causing the makeup to sit on top of the skin and "cling" to whatever touches it. I would try using oil blotting papers throughout the day. Another solution is to try several different brands to see which works best. Also, if you have oily skin, try a powder foundation that is sold with or comes with a primer. These adhere to the skin better and some mineral makeup companies even claim they are good for your skin because they are all natural, even the UVA/UVB protection. If your skin is dry, you could also try the powder makeup with primer - just be sure to use a good moisturizer under the primer. All in all, I think the key is keeping the skin free of excess oil and using a good foundation that adheres better to the skin. Let me know if that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
How do I stop my makeup frm rubbing off ie: when I use my phone. Or when giving someone a hug it comes off on thier clothes. PLS help
MAKEUP question from Priyanka
Hi Priyanka, No problem, just get a good concealer. If there is a lot of red in the marks on your face, choose a concealer that is green to counteract the redness. Then, continue with your foundation, applying over the concealer and slightly blending. I use my fingers to apply foundation as it gives the desired medium coverage. If you want lighter coverage, use a sponge or a makeup brush. Be careful not to pull and tug too much or the concealer will just blend in with the foundation and not conceal as well. Finish with the application of translucent powder by patting in on with a pad or brush, then lightly brushing off the excess. This will set your makeup and cover your marks. Let me know how it goes! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I HAVE SOME MARKS IN MY FACE
MAKEUP question from Kathija
Hi Kathija, O.k. this is fun! If you have a few weeks before the wedding, the thing to do is get your skin in its best condition. Go get a facial if you can (one/two weeks ahead so any redness from the facial is gone) Also, start a regular regimen of cleansing, toning, proper moisturizering twice a day. Exfoliate (to remove dead skin cells) a couple of times a week and use a moisture mask once a week (twice a week, if you have dry skin) and a clay mask once a week (for deep cleansing the skin). These products will get your skin in peak condition for makeup application. Next, if you can, go to a makeup counter and get your makeup done. Ask around for a good makeup artist and you may want to try a couple of different looks before the big day. A couple of tips if you are going to do your own makeup....experiment with different looks. Keep it natural but, remember there will be a lot of photos taken that day. If you have light skin, go a little darker on foundation color to show up better on camera/video. Also, use matte colors w/o shimmer or glitter for a more natural look. For specific application and what colors to use, check out some of our other pages for some excellent colors for your skin and hair color. Best Wishes for a beautiful day! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
how to get ready for marriage in fine make up
MAKEUP question from Rithika
Hi Rithika, Thanks for your question! I've found that the best makeup removers are in a creamy or lotion formula sometimes called a milky cleanser. They easily "break down" the makeup which makes it easier to remove. I always use a separate eye makeup remover as this is a sensitive area. If you are using a waterproof mascara, use an eye makeup remover that is a dual phase, usually an oil/water looking formula. This gently breaks down the mascara and other eye area makeup and removes it. For non-waterproof mascara, any eye makeup remover should work. Don't worry if there's still a little residue as your makeup remover will finish the job. Also, don't forgot to follow up with a toner (choose an appropriate one for your skin type). This will lightly exfoliate and remove any residue left from the milky cleanser. For morning cleanser or before makeup application, I like a gentle gel cleanser so, my skin feels really clean before applying moisture and makeup. Hope that helps! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
how 2 remove makeup?
Makeup question from Poornima
Dear Poornima, For a natural makeup try these tips. If you have good skin, just use a tinted moisturizer and translucent powder. For dry skin, use a creme or liquid formula and for oily/acne skin, use a mineral makeup powder. For the creme or liquid application, I always use my fingers for a good coverage. Make sure you try several colors before choosing the perfect match. Then, follow up with a good translucent powder. Pat the powder on, then lightly brush off excess. Use neutral colors on the eyes and lips. For cheeks, use a natural pink or peachy color just on the apply of the cheeks. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Wants to know how to makeup naturaly
MAKEUP question from Ashlea
Dear Ashlea, That is a good question! Just looking at the magazines and in the movies, you can tell that they are professionally made up. The look can vary from ultra glamorous to down to earth natural. Each look is very different. In their candid shots, many are with no makeup at all. The most common thing I've noticed is it seems they do their best to keep their skin in good condition. Whether they are wearing makeup or not, you can tell that their skin is usually in peak form. So, I would start with a regimen of good skin care for your skin type as well as, drinking plenty of liquids, ample exercise, good diet or even a trip to an esthetician or dermatologist. Once your skin is in it's best condition, almost any makeup is going to look fabulous.....dramatic to natural, it's up to you! To get these tips, check out other questions and answers in this site or beauty and fashion magazines - especially beauty editor's "recommended products" and makeup artists to the stars "how to" columns. Try the looks yourself and see what makes you look like a star! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i'm not for sure on how to put my makeup on like the stars!
MAKEUP question from Pratiba
Hi Pratiba, There are lots of moisturizers with gentle bleaching agents in them that you could try. It takes a while to notice a difference as they work slowly over time. Also, you could talk to a dermatologist about having them permanently removed. In the meantime, use a good concealer to cover them up. Then, apply foundation makeup and powder as usual. I'm not a doctor but, I'm thinking this could be temporary since lots of hormonal changes take place when having a child. They could disappear over time on their own. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i am 27yrs old ,married with a kid who is 18 months i find small black patchs on either side of my lips its just been 2 week this has shown up any home remedy or medicine pls help
MAKEUP question from Courtney
Hi Courtney, For a natural look with blue eyes and brown hair, try using a tinted moisturizer that is just one shade darker than your natural color. This will give a warm glow to your skin. If you prefer a matte look add a light veil of powder. The best way is to use a big powder brush and pat it on, then brush off any excess. Be sure to get a very fine powder to avoid the "cakey" look. Next, choose a bronzy or tawny rose blush and apply only to the apple of the cheeks. For eyes, choose a neutral color palate with at least 3 shades (light to dark). Begin with an eye shadow brush and using the lightest color first, shade from lash to brow. Next, using an angle brush, apply the medium color to the crease of the eye (the area just under the eye brow called the "orbital" bone). Make sure to blend with the larger shade brush. (Shading is the key to a natural look.) The darkest color can be used for a more dramatic look by adding it just to the outside corners and blending it with the "crease" color. Next, choose a brown or bronze eye pencil. Apply by placing "dots" or "dashes" as close to the eye lashes as possible then, using a small, stiff brush (looks similar to a lip brush) to smooth the dots or dashes into a smokey line across the lid. Do the same on the bottom but, only go half way across from the outside to the inside for a more natural daytime look. For lips, use a peachy or pink color lip gloss. Let me know if this helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have blue eyes and brownish hair. I'm usually told I don't need make up, but when I do how could I get a very natural look?
MAKEUP question from Meghan
Hi Meghan, I would try a tinted moisturizer. They are translucent so, your freckles will show through for a really natural look. For color, choose a shade that is just one shade darker than your natural color. This will give a nice warm glow to the skin. The bonus is most tinted moistuizers have a sunscreen, too. If you prefer a matte look, add a very fine translucent face powder by patting it on with a large powder brush and brushing off any excess afterwards. Thanks for writing in and let me know how it goes! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I HAVE BEEN HAVING TROUBLE FINDING THE RIGHT MAKEUP FOR MY SKIN TONES AND TEXTURE. I AM VERY PALE AND HAVE SOMEWHAT DRY SKIN WITH A LOT OF FRECKLES. I PREFER A SOMEWHAT NATURAL YET PRETTY LOOK. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
MAKEUP question from Ashlee
Hi Ashlee, Great question! Use a good concealer by patting and blending it on only on the areas that are "spotty" then, use a mineral makeup powder. Be sure to apply it in layers until you've reached the desired coverage. Also, get the primer and the brush that goes with the mineral makeup. They really do make the difference. Also, since your lips are naturally red rosy, try using a lip gloss to just accent them. Let me know how it goes. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
hey i like putting bright tones on my lips as it is bold but i have a red rose tint to them anyway and i have spots on my forhead how do i cover them up without looking like a tramp?? help me please! Ashlee xx
MAKEUP question from Vanesa
Hi Vanesa, Good question. First things first, make sure to have a good skin care regimen so, you are starting with a good smooth canvas. (Exfoliating one or two times a week will help your foundation to look more smooth.) To avoid looking like a "hoe", start with using foundation makeup that looks smooth and natural. If your skin is oily or combination, try a mineral makeup powder. If you have dryer skin, use a good liquid foundation and a very translucent powder that is not cakey. Also, make sure the color is right. (Check your color by going outside to see if the match is good.) Next, the eyes are very important in avoiding the "hoe" look. Choose good colors for your eye and hair color. (See our eye shadow pages for some ideas on what is good for your particular color.) The most important thing here is application. Start with a light color and apply from lash to brow. Then, add the medium color to the "crease" and lastly, add the darkest color to the outside corner only. Make sure to use an eyeshadow brush or foam applicator to blend each step really well. This will make a smokier, sexier look without looking too made up. For eyeliner, use a pencil and apply with short dashes or dots, then using a special eyeliner brush that is small and stiff (looks similar to a lip brush but, more stiff to touch), smooth out the dots/dashes to one line across the lid. In most cases, on the bottom, it looks better to only go half way across with your liner - and use the same color on top/bottom. (If you have small eyes or wide set eyes, go all the way across the bottom lash line, too.) Add dark brown or black mascara. For blush, use a color that is natural and not too bright. Apply only to the apple of the cheek area. For lips, use a color that works with the rest of your makeup. For example, if you've applied bright colors to your eyes, use a very soft lip liner and gloss. If you've used more natural colors on your eyes, go "all out" on the lips.....like bright red or magenta. This will give a more balanced look. Thanks for writing in. Let me know if that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
how do i put on make up with out making my self look like a hoe
MAKEUP question from Foxy
Hi Foxy, For school, I would keep it very minimum and a natural look. Maybe, eyeliner and mascara for the eyes and a nice lip gloss. A natural colored cream blush works great with this look, too, just to brighten up the face a bit. Add only to the apple of the cheek and blend well. This will keep your makeup time to a minimum and before school and after gym, easy to freshen up with just a little gloss and the cream blush. However, if your skin has an uneven tone or you just want a little glow, use a tinted moisturizer to even out any blotchiness, redness or light scaring from pimples. For more pronounced acne or scaring, use a concealer first where the scaring is then, oil-free liquid foundation. Whether you are using a tinted moisturizer or a liquid foundation follow up with a very fine, translucent powder if you prefer a matte look. Thanks for writing in. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
what looks best for school
MAKEUP question from Katie
Hi Katie, At your age, unless you have some acne issues, a good oil-free liquid foundation or liquid mineral makeup is perfect for a natural look with a little glow. To apply foundation, I like to use my fingers as it gives the best coverage, I feel. If you like a little less coverage, use a sponge which also helps to even it out. Another way to apply foundation is with a makeup brush. Start with a little pea size on each part of the face (forehead, cheeks, chin, nose) then, smooth out with fingers, sponge or makeup brush (for makeup brush, use even downward strokes to avoid streaking). For powder, just make sure it's very fine to the touch and when applied, it doesn't look like cake. To choose color, there are usually light, medium or dark and in some lines, pink, yellow or even green. I like to use a translucent shade that is close to my skin color. However, the pink can create a warm candle lit look and will help to correct yellow or sallow looking skin tones. The green and yellow are to counteract the appearance of red or blotchy skin tones. To apply powder, use a big powder brush or the pad that comes with it. Don't drag it across the face instead, pat the brush or pad onto the face then brush away any excess powder on the face. If your skin is oily or acne prone, use a mineral makeup powder. Be sure to purchase the primer and brush that goes with it as, you will need it to perfect the look. For a more natural look apply the powder in layers and apply as described above for powder. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I'm a 24 years old with no regular make up routine. What kind of foundation/powder should I be using on my face to get that natural finished look?
MAKEUP question from Julia
Hi Julia, Since you are 14, you should ask your parents first. With their permission, a little makeup is o.k. For example, some lip gloss, mascara and maybe a little blush, if needed. If you have good skin, I would focus on keeping it that way. Use good quality products and cleanse your skin daily, apply a gentle toner and protect with a good moisturizer that has a sunscreen. If you have combination or oily skin, go to a dermatologist and see if you need medication or if a good skin care regimen is o.k. for you. At your age, I think this is much more important than a full made up look. There's plenty of time for that when you really need it! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i'm only 14 should i be putting makeup on?
MAKEUP question from Bruce
Hi Bruce,
Yep, it's true. I think men do appreciate a woman that looks after herself. It doesn't necessarily mean that you need to put on a tramp look. A nice classy, elegant look is easy to achieve and makes a huge difference in the way you express yourself. The first step is always skin care. Although I'm not a doctor or even an esthetician, I've noticed that other important ingredients to looking and feeling good are: drink plenty of water, get some exercise and eat a good diet. These are also things others will notice about you - how well you take care of you! So, having said that, determine your skin care regimen based on your needs. Is your skin oily, combination or dry. Any acne issues? Take care of this first thing and any makeup you add will only compliment what you have naturally. Speaking of what you have naturally.....What part of your face do you want to emphasize, conceal, etc? For example, do you have big, pouty, sexy lips? Or beautiful dark doe eyes, piercing blue or green eyes? Is the shape of your face too round or square? Once you have determined these things, emphasize them. Like for big pouty lips, use a great red lipstick or if it's your eyes, use the best colors to really play up the color and shape of your eyes. If you are emphasizing your eyes, go easy on the lips and vice versa. Good luck and let me know if you need more specific help. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I AM NEW TO WEARING MAKEUP SINCE MOST OF MY LIFE I HAVE SPENT NOT WEARING MAKEUP.
IT SEEMS THAT IF I WANT TO MEET MEN THIS DAY & AGE I HAVE TO START TAKING CARE OF MY LOOKS. I KNOW THAT IT MAY SEEM STRANGE WITH MY FIRST NAME & ALL BUT I AM A BIOLOGICAL FEMALE WHO WAS RAISED TO NOT WEAR MAKEUP.
MAKEUP question from Madi
Hi Madi, O.k., let me see if I can give you a few tips on how to look hot and still have good looking make up. First, I ALWAYS say good skin is the perfect way to start with having a good and natural looking makeup. So, if you don't have a good skin care regimen, start there. Get a good cleanser, toner and moisturizer and use them twice a day. Other specific products for your needs would be based on your skin type but, most everyone should exfoliate at least once a week and use either a clay mask (oily/combination) or a moisture (dry/combination) as per the recommendations of the product. This, in addition to a good diet, plenty of water and exercise, will get your skin in really great condition. Now, you are ready for a makeup lesson. Apply concealer and eye shadow base first. Then, choose a good foundation. Generally, if you have oily/combination skin, I recommend a mineral powder foundation. For dry/combination I like to use a liquid or cream foundation. Next, if you are using a liquid or cream foundation, choose a translucent powder. Use either light, medium or dark appropriate for your skin color. Color correcting powders like green (takes out the appearance of redness), pink (gives a nice glow and offsets yellow or sallow appearance), or yellow (gives a nice candlelight glow and offsets too much pink in the skin). Apply powder with the pad that comes with it by patting it onto the skin. Don't drag it across the face as this will wipe off the foundation and create streaks. Once you have patted on your powder, use a powder brush to wipe off any excess. I usually do the eyes next. For some great tips on color and application, check out the eyeshadow and eyeliner pages as well as, the smokey eye page. Apply your mascara. Then, blush on the apple of the cheeks. For lips, I usually play them up if the eye makeup is dramatic (smokey) or if the eye makeup is subdued, I balance the look with a brighter lipstick. You will need to decide what is your best feature and work it! Try different looks and colors you wouldn't normally choose. The biggest tip of all is make sure you are using good brushes and get yourself some wedge sponges. They are great for blending and "erasing" mistakes. This is what sets apart a more classy look that is really hot. Good luck and let me know if this helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
ok so i want to have good looking make up but i want it to look hot but i cant seem to know how to do so can you help me?
Makeup question from Maude
Hi Maude, Great question! There are several remedies to try when your foundation won't blend properly. I would start with your skin care regimen. If you are not using a regular cleanse, tone and moisturize regimen, try this first. Also, make sure you exfoliate with a very gentle exfoliating product: once a week for dry skin and three times a week for oily skin, twice a week for normal/combination skin types. Another suggestion would be to also use a clay mask to deep cleanse your skin and pores (use the same schedule as exfoliating but, not on the same day). If your skin is dry, add a moisture mask a couple of times per week to your regimen, as well. What could be happening is that the foundation is grabbing onto dead skin cells sitting on top of the skin, blending with them and therefore, the foundation cannot blend or "set" properly. So, try these things first if you aren't already doing them. If you are, the problem could be that liquid foundation is not appropriate for you. Perhaps, if you tend to be on the oily side, you could try a couple of things. First, try "setting" your liquid foundation with a translucent powder by loading the powder on to the pad and patting or rolling it on your face. Dragging the pad across the foundation will streak and remove most of the liquid foundation. Another idea is to use mineral makeup powder instead of a liquid. Mineral makeup is a bit tricky and if your skin is dry, not something I would recommend. However, if your skin is oily or oily combination, it is really beautiful once you mastered the application. The first tip is to buy the brush and primer that go with it. Then, apply the primer lightly. Next, load the brush and pat the product on to your skin. Clear any excess with the brush. Again, try not to drag the brush as this will create streaks and make it look uneven. For desired coverage, apply in layers over the entire face until you've reached the coverage you want. If you don't get it the first time, don't give up - try it again and you will be surprised at how much you like the results. If your skin is dry, this could cause blending problems as well. Again, check above for a good skin care regimen. If you are still having issues, try applying powder as described above. You may need a better moisturizer or it may be time to check out a cream make up which usually has more moisture and will give better coverage. Good luck and I hope this helps you! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I am 53 years old, try to do good health regimin. When I put on liquid makeup,it sits on my face and does not blend well. Any suggestions appreciated
Makeup question from Mandy
Hi Mandy, Great question! If you haven't worn much make up, it takes time to get used to it and the way it changes your appearance. I always suggest that you get a good skin care regimen first to keep your "canvas" looking good and feeling healthy. Always wash your face morning and night and apply the appropriate moisturizers even when wearing foundation (makeup). I usually start with concealer under the eye which gets applied to the inside corner of the eye area where any dark circles might be. When first starting out, try to get samples of different foundation colors, when you can, just to see what you like and how it's going to feel on your face. For normal and dry skin types, you will probably prefer a liquid. If you can, try three different colors on the side of your cheek and go outside with a mirror to check which matches best. Once you have determined the best color, then apply to the entire face. You can use a sponge (soaks up a lot of product but, gives a very shear coverage), makeup brush (use downward strokes and make sure it's a synthetic brush as they work best with foundations - medium coverage) or just your fingers (I prefer this method as it doesn't use as much product and you can get better coverage). If you have combination or oily skin, you may want to consider a mineral makeup powder. In this case, be sure to use the recommended primer and special brush for better application and end results. Mineral powder makeup can have a beautiful natural look but, it may take some practice so, be patient and try it several times to get the desired effect. If you are using a liquid makeup you will want to "seal it in" with a powder. Use a very finely ground loose powder for the most natural look. For your skin tone, I would use a light translucent powder. Next, I usually choose a blush. For your coloring, dark brown hair and green eyes, I would choose a neutral, rosy color and apply it just to the apple of the cheek area. For your eyes, I would use colors that are bronze-ish or even copperish. This will bring out the green in your eyes. If you wanted to use a little green, wine or purple, that would also bring out the green in your eyes. I would just use these as accents like with eye liners or a little shadow just on the outside corner of the eyes. Use dark brown or black mascara. For your lips, choose a nice lip gloss that is neutral in color with a matching lip liner. Lip liner helps define the lips and will also keep the gloss on longer. Generally speaking, if you playing up the eyes, you will be more neutral with the lips. But, if you want to draw attention to your lips, use natural colors on your eyes and for you, I would choose an orange-ish red lipstick - not too orange -but stay away from too much blue red. For more tips on how to apply the eye shadow and lipstick, visit our pages with those titles. I hope this will help you. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Hi im not very confident with make up and don't really know what suits me. I have dark brown hair, green eyes and pale(ish) skin. What colours, etc do you suggest i apply?
Makeup question from Holly
Hello Holly, Great question! I don't necessarily think it is the amount of makeup as much as it is the fact that the people on television have access to the best makeup artists and products the industry has to offer. But, all is not lost as I have some makeup help for you. To begin with, just like a painting the canvas needs to be in its best condition. So, start with a good skin care regimen. Wash, tone and moisturize twice a day with a good skin care line. Use an exfoliater to remove dead skin cells twice a week (3, if your skin is oily or problematic) and a clay mask to deep cleanse 2 or 3 times per week. If your skin is dry, use a moisture mask one or two times per week. Now, you can begin with color. Choose your foundation in a well lighted area where and try 2 or 3 colors on your cheek to see what matches best. I like to apply makeup with my fingers (gives the best coverage and is more evenly distributed) but, you can use a sponge for less coverage or a makeup brush for a medium coverage (use downward strokes from the top). Or, if you tend to have oily/acne skin, try a mineral makeup powder but, be sure to purchase the primer and brush to go with it for optimum results. Choose a blush that's good for your skin tone and apply it to the apple of the cheeks only. For eye shadow, check out our smoky eyes and eye shadow pages for some great tips on application and color choices. The technique you see a lot on television is the smoky eye look. For lips, just make sure if you are playing up the eyes, go more subdued on the lips. The reverse is also true. If you are focusing on your lips, go more neutral on the eyes. Good luck and let me know if that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
How can you make your make-up look as good as the people you see on TV... is it the amount or the make-up? I've got the personal match foundation how do you get the best out of it?
Makeup question from Emilee
Hi Emilee, Oh, how exciting that prom is coming up for you! For a coral dress, hmm. I think with coral, I would try to find a matching coral lipstick and use copperish and peachy colors for your eye shadow. Line your eyes with a dark brown eye liner and use black mascara. For cheeks, choose a lighter shade of peach color not too bright and only on the apple of the cheek bone. Have a fab time at the prom! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
what color makeup would you wear with a coral dress for prom?
Makeup question from June
Hi June, With medium brown skin tone, you have a lot of options. If you want a more natural look, stay with the neutral browns and black. I would stay away from cooler colors like grey and blue. You could use purples, greens and lavender colors for accents on your eyes and a more dramatic look. For lips, use bright colors to brighten up your face. Stay away from yellow or orange lipstick in case of any yellow in your skin (it will make your skin look pale and sickly if you already have these colors in your skin tone). Good luck and let me know how it goes. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
what colors are best suited for me? my skintone is med brown
Makeup question from Melissa
Hey Melissa, I'm thinking that you could wear pastel eye shadows (they show up nicely on darker skin tones) on your eyes such as baby blue, pinks even yellow. Then, choose a nice pink lipstick and lip liner that compliments your dress. If the dress is pale pink, I would go with a darker pink. You may want to take the dress with you to match it because there are so many shades of pink and you don't want it to clash with the dress but, accent it. Also, using a lip liner will keep your lipstick on longer and give a more classy look for your special night! Have fun! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
hey im going to a ball and im wearing this pink dress so i was wondering if i should match my makeup to my dress or stick with the makeup that matches my skin colour (very dark) melissa
Makeup question from Samy
Hi Samy, Ooh la la! A red cocktail dress with your coloring sounds beautiful! I would definitely wear a matching red lipstick and go easy on the eyes. Maybe just a black liquid liner and heavy mascara. Or, for a more classy look that will bring out the blue in your eyes, use brown eye shadows and a dark brown liner with black mascara. Either one of these looks will make you the star of the evening with your red dress! Good luck and let me know how it goes! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I'm not sure if you'll be able to respond to this in time, because it's really last minute! Tonight I'm going to a nice restaurant, and I'm wearing a red, spaghetti strap cocktail dress. It's very simple and has a classic feel. I have medium length, ash blonde hair, and blue-gray eyes. I have no idea what kind of makeup to wear! I don't want to overdo it, but I am looking for a good evening combination. Any recommendations?
Makeup question from Becky
Hi Becky, Maybe you should just try using a tinted moisturizer. If your skin is good and you don't need much coverage, this could be perfect as it could be more gentle on your skin. Be sure to use a little translucent powder to even everything out and seal in the moisture. For cleansing, even though you say your not sensitive if your skin is turning red, perhaps you should try a gentle, milky cleanser for sensitive skin to remove your makeup. If your using a gel cleanser, this could be causing the redness in your skin or if you are using a toner with alcohol, this could cause irritated skin, too. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I'm white and have good skin...except when i put on make up...it just doesnt seem to look right even though the shades are right...and then when taking off the make up my face gets red. i don't have sensitive skin...but i don't understand. thanks!
Makeup question from Brianna
Hi Brianna, Colors that go well with light brown hair, brown eyes and light tan skin are in the neutral family. For example, on your eyes use a neutral brownish palate and your cheeks a nice tawny rose would look very classy. For your lips, coral or peachy gloss or lipstick matches well with your complexion. If you wanted a more dramatic look start with using purple or green on your eyes but, only in small amounts - maybe eye liner or shadow at the corners of the eyes. If you want to play up your lips, a beautiful red lipstick is always classy. If you haven't worn red lipstick before, it may take some getting used to. If you do wear red or another bright color like magenta, make sure you keep the eyes more neutral. Hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have medium brown hair with brown eyes and light tan skin, what colors can I use for make up that would look nice?
Makeup question from Sarah
Hi Sarah, Great questions. I'll start with the difference between concealer and foundation. Concealer is mostly used under the eyes to cover dark circle or even out the skin tone under the eye area. It is also used to cover any scarring from pimples or other discolorations on the skin. It is applied before foundation and after moisturizer and/or eye cream. Foundation is used to even out skin tone and generally helps the face to look "flawless". There are many different types of foundation from liquid to powder mineral. To determine which is best for you, you need to know the outcome you want and what skin type you have. For example, if you don't need much coverage, you may just want a tinted moisturizer but, if you have acne, oily skin or rosecea (redness, blotchiness) you may want a mineral powder makeup. Cream foundations are heavier coverage and are great for photography or someone with dry skin. Liquid foundation is available in oil-free for a medium coverage on combination/oily skin and regular liquid makeup is great for combination/dry skin types (medium coverage). Primer is generally used with mineral powder makeup before you apply the powder and after your moisturizer to help the powder go on more evenly and adhere to the skin better. Some other face products are blush (for coloring the cheeks), contour (darker blushes that help to shape the face), face powders (used with liquid or cream foundations to "seal in" the foundation and give a more finished, natural look). Other items to consider are brushes and/or sponges for foundation application. Foundation brushes are generally made of synthetic fibers and can be used to apply liquid or cream foundation with downward strokes. Also, cosmetic sponges are another method of application. The method I prefer is with my fingers as that seems to give the best overall coverage. Sponges are good for smoothing things out or getting into difficult spots like around the eye area. Both the brush and the sponge will soak up some product, as well. That's about it for the face so, I hope that helps you out! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
hi! i really help on whay to buy! But first i need to know some thing!
what is the difference in concealer and foundation?
what is primer used for?
one last thing, if you could what are the basics, if you could just tell me what they are then put what they are used for beside it!
thanks!
Makeup question from Robert
Hi Robert, First, I always recommend good skin care to have the best possible outcome after applying makeup. So, make sure you cleanse, tone and moisturize twice a day. Exfoliate a couple of times and week (removes dead skin cells that makeup will adhere to and cause blotchy-looking skin) and use a moisture mask (once a week for oily skin and two or three times a week for dry skin to help keep the skin soft and supple). There are other products for special areas of concern like eye cream for lines and/or wrinkles, serums for just about everything from vitamins for the skin to oily, wrinkled, stressed or dried out skin, acne products, and masks for purifying or moisturizing the skin, just to mention a few. So, once you have your skin in it's optimum condition, which is going to improve your look with or without makeup, you are ready to choose a good foundation for yourself. There are all types out there from liquid to creams to mineral powder makeup. As a general rule, I like to use liquid makeup (oil-free for combination/oily skin and regular liquid for combination/dry skin) for a medium coverage, cream for dry skin and combination/dry that needs more coverage (also good for photography) and when there are skin issues like rosecea (redness), sensitivity or acne, I prefer to use mineral powder makeup. If you are using liquid or cream, you will need a translucent powder to finish the look.If you are using a mineral powder foundation, get the brush and primer. For more coverage, apply it in layers. Before foundation application, if you need coverage under the eyes or you have some blotchy patches, use a concealer by patting it on to the affected area then follow with foundation and powder. Next, apply a powder blush to the apple of the cheek area. Use pastel light colors for a more feminine, subtle look. For eyes, choose natural colors like browns, taupes, coppers and apply with a light hand (not too dark), blend so there are no defined lines. Follow up with a brown or black liner (thin line, not too thick for a more feminine look) and of course, dark brown or black mascara. When choosing lipstick, go lighter if you've used a lot of eye shadow and darker if the eye shadow is lighter. This way, the focus is either on the eyes or the lips ("play up" your best feature - eyes or lips). Good luck, Robert, I hope I've helped you out a bit! Teresa
MY QUESTION: I need makeup help! I dress as a woman at times and need advice. I'm medium completed like to look very feminine
Makeup question from Charlotte
Hi Charlotte, Great question! For prom makeup, the rules are a bit different from an everyday look. Basically, if your dress is simple, you can be a little more bold with your makeup. For example, if your dress is black or a jewel tone like emerald green, go with simple black eyeliner, mascara and red lipstick. If your dress is a bit more complicated like a bright floral or magenta pink with lots of gathers, etc., keep the look on your face simple. For example, maybe pastel eyeshadows and a lip gloss are all you need with so much going on with the dress. Have fun at the prom! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have my prom in 2 weeks time, and I really need some tips on make up, especially for my eyes. Please help!
Makeup question from Alma
Hi Alma, For black hair and brown eyes, I like to use brighter eye shadow colors like pastel pinks, blues, yellows (unless you have yellow tone skin) and lavender which will brighten the face. For eye liner pencils, go for rich jewel tone colors like navy blue, purple or choose a charcoal gray. For lips, a great magenta or true red (not too blue red or to orange red). For eye brows, the best idea is to accent what you have. The arch should be just at the outside of the iris when looking straight into the mirror. You may have to pluck this area to make the appearance of the arch. Only pluck hairs under the brow, not on top. To determine the outside or end of the brow, take a pencil and place it at an angle at the end of the eye. At the top of the pencil is where the brow should taper off and end. For the inside brow, near the nose, take your pencil and place it vertically across the tear duct inside your eye and at the top of the pencil is where your brow should begin. It may be necessary to wax or remove the hair between the eyes to get the perfect brow. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
i have black hair and brown eyes what colors are best for me and what style for eyebrows is best for me i have a round face
Makeup question from September
Hi September, Good for you for writing in! I hope I can help. Your challenge is that your skin is a bit oily and you need something that will give you some good coverage to cover the discoloration without making you look too made up. Try using a mineral makeup powder. Make sure you get the primer and the brush the brand you purchase recommends as it really makes the application much easier. Apply it in layers to get the desired coverage. Don't try to get the maximum coverage in the first application. Instead layer over and over until you are satisfied with the coverage. It may take a few times of applying this type of makeup but, mineral makeup has so many benefits like natural sunscreen, great for sensitive skin, and a more natural finished look to name a few. For your lips, choose a lip liner that is as close to a natural color that you would have if you had color in your lips. Draw your lips on with this color and fill in the lines with the same lip pencil. Over it, use a matching matte lipstick or lip stain. Lip gloss will make the lip liner too greasy and it will dissipate sooner but, if you use a matte or lip stain, it will stay on longer and look more natural. Good luck, September, and I hope this helps you out! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Hello How are you, I am battling a skin condition called Vitiligo (skin discoloration) I need to know What is the best brand of foundation Makeup to cover it. I've tried many brands and so far I have had no luck. Also I like to keep a natural look so I would need advice on lip color something that would look as if it were my natural lips. Gloss alone does not work seeing that I don't have any color to my lips. I do have a little bit of oily skin in my nose and chin area. my complexion is Between Halle Berry and Tyra Banks. Thank you for any advice you can offer.
Makeup question from Jaycee
Hi Jacyee, O.k., let's start with the acne. Since you don't have much, this may be easily remedied by just trying different skin care regimens specifically designed for your need to see which works best for you. Also, make sure you are eating right, getting enough sleep and water and try to avoid stress. These can all be contributers to acne. For foundation, do try the mineral powder makeup. Some of the companies claim they are less irritating to the skin and have natural sunscreen in them. Be sure to buy the primer and brush and be prepared to try it a few times to get the hang of it. For more coverage, layer it on as you put it on in certain areas of the face. For your green eyes and dark hair, you are lucky to have such a great combination! The best colors for your eyes are browns, greens and purple or burgundy colors. The purple and burgundy colors are really going to bring out the green in your eyes. If you are choosing green and want a more natural look, go with a khaki but, for a more daring fun look, try a bright teal (just a swipe across the lid but, don't go up to the crease line. If you are going to wear brown eye shadows, jazz it up with red lipstick (blue red for yellow skin undertones and orange red for pink undertones). This will look great with your dark hair, too. Good luck and let me know if I've helped you out! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have some acne not alot ugly dark brown hair that will not stay! And green eyes. I am totally lost what make-up to wear and how to put it on. Please help!
Makeup question from Eve
Hi Eve, Thanks for writing in. Your combination of hazelnut hair, brown eyes and ivory skin are perfect for a big range of colors. If you prefer a more natural look, go for neutral tones like browns and coppers for your eyes and peachy tones for blush and lips. For a little more excitement the complimentary colors for brown eyes are in the purple and green tones. These colors bring out any green or yellow flecks that would be in the iris of your eyes. You could be subtle and use eye liners in these colors or really eye catching with eye shadow palettes. If you are going to use dramatic colors on your eyes, go easy on the lips with gloss or a neutral lipstick. For lips, you could use pure red or an orange red in lipstick or gloss. Pink or peach lipsticks are good for your coloring as well. Good luck and I hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have light hazelnut hair colour brown eyes fair ivory skin and i really want to know what kind of makeup colours would suit me?
Makeup question from Jo
Hi Jo, To keep foundation from "running" you can try a few things. I always like to start with making sure your "canvas" (skin) is in optimum condition so, start with a good skin care regimen before you even try to change your makeup. I'm assuming your skin is combination/oily as your foundation may run if this is not kept in check. Make sure to cleanse, tone and moisturize twice a day. Then, add a clay mask for deep cleansing and exfoliater to remove dead skin cells. You should do this a minimum of twice a week. Try this for a couple of weeks to see if there's any improvement. You could also try oil blotting papers at mid-day to 'blot" any oil that has accumulated (pat this on, dry drag it across the skin as this will remove or streak the foundation/powder). If this is still not working, you might want to change your foundation to a mineral makeup powder or a dual finish powder. Mineral makeup is usually all natural and even includes sunscreen. If you choose to use mineral powder be sure to use the proper mineral makeup brush and primer and allow yourself some time to get used to it. It was originally created for acne problems but, some companies claim it is so gentle it can be used after some dermatological procedures. Dual finish is powder/foundation combo that gives a heavier coverage and is usually matte finish. For your eyeliner running, make sure the eye is completely dry then, try using a liquid liner. It's a bit tricky, at first, to use but the best way to apply it is to not try making one solid line across the eye lid. Instead, start at the outside of the eye, draw a short line, pick up the brush and layer over the previous line, then go a little more and so on, until you are at the inside of the eye. The line at the outside usually starts a little thicker and then is thinner as you go across. Thanks for writing in. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
how do i stop my foundation from running during the day? also how do i wear eyeliner in my eye with out it running?
Makeup question from Kenzie
Hi Kenzie, O.k., let's start with the foundation. You mentioned you had goldish freckles, light ivory skin and some blackheads/pimples and combination/oily skin. You are the perfect candidate for mineral makeup or an oil-free liquid makeup with a matte finish would work as well. Mineral makeup is very gentle and most contain a natural sunscreen. It's a little tricky to use so, make sure you get the primer and the special brush to apply it and allow a few "trial and errors" before you actually wear it out. For more coverage in areas where there are blemishes, layer it on. For your freckles, let them show through as they are kisses from heaven, I say! If you really want to cover them, though, just layer on the mineral powder foundation. If you choose to use the liquid makeup, the coverage will most likely be light to medium and will require that you use a concealer under to cover any blemishes. Your freckles will probably show through but, it will be a nice natural coverage. You will need to follow up with powder when using liquid makeup. Now, for your eyes which you said are small, close together and gray/blue. Since they are close together, you should apply a beige, ivory, gold, or pastel pink from lash to eye brow, then focus on the outer corner of the eyes for your darker primary colors and even your eye liner should stay mostly at the outer corner. The best colors with your eyes/hair/skin color are brownish, wine or burgundy or copper. These colors will bring out the blue in your eyes. Another great color is steel blue. With blond eye lashes, I still use black mascara but, dark brown is good, too. For cheeks, since you have an oval/heart shaped face, I would apply a golden contour (bronzing powders also work great for this) between the apple of your cheeks and the jaw line to create a more defined cheek bone. Then, on the apple of your, use a peachy or pink pastel blush (whatever your lipstick color is closest to). For your lips, you said your upper lip was thin. To make it look more like the bottom lip, choose a natural color lip liner and line the top lip just on the outside of your natural lip line and the bottom lip, just on the inside. Fill in with a matching lipstick. (You can choose almost any color lipstick with a natural lip liner but, be sure to blend the lines so there's not that defined lip liner look.) For your lip color, true red is really pretty and dramatic so, only use it when you are not so dramatic with the eyes. Other great colors are pink and even peach because of the gold in your hair and your ivory skin. I hope this helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Okay well i need help with making myself look pretty,(I love all make up i'm open to anything you suggest I love eye make up especially.). I use foundation but i want to know how to best choose/apply it. My skin is a very light ivory (normal-oily) I have goldish freckles. I do have some discolored areas, blackheads/pimples. My eyes are a gray/blue kind of small/round a little close together. My eyelashes are blonde. My face shape is between oval and heart. Kind of chubby cheeks. And my upper lip is kind of thin. And my hair is a gold color. Thanks :) :)
Makeup question from Aima
Hi Aima,
The best way to protect your complexion is to make sure to use sunscreen in your moisturizer and your foundation. If you use a tinted moisturizer, make sure it has an spf, as well. Also, be sure to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin twice daily. Once or twice a week, you should exfoliate and use a clarifying mask to remove dead skin cells and deep cleanse the pores. To keep your skin soft, supple and hydrated, use a moisture mask. Taking care of your skin properly will give you the best protection and your skin will be beautiful!

MY QUESTION:
tell me how i can make good n fair complection n protect the raise of sun
Makeup question from Anne
Hi Anne, With a chocolate brown dress, you can use a lot of color on your face. Starting with lips, colors that look great with blonde hair and blue eyes would definitely be a true red (not too blue and not too orange). If you choose to use the red lipstick, go with a softer look on the eyes by using a chocolate brown shadow and black eye liner and of course, lots of black mascara. For cheeks, use a peachy pastel blush with a very light hand. Be sure to blend well so there is not a defined line. I usually apply my face powder first then, apply the blush and blend it with a makeup sponge. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I will be wearing a chocolate brown dress and have lighter blonde hair, light blue eyes and a fair complexion. What eye/cheek/lip color should I wear with this dress?
Makeup question from Hannah
Hi Hannah, I have a few thoughts for you. First about your "close together", hazel eyes. There are lots of choices with hazel eyes. For a natural look that will make them look more blue, use browns, coppers, or taupe eye shadows. Apply the darkest color to the outside corner of the eye only to draw the eye outward lessening the appearance of them being too close together. So, for example, choose a palate that has three colors. Use the lightest color all over the lid from lash to brow. The medium color goes in the crease just below the brow bone and the darkest color goes only on the outside corners and then blend all so there is no defined lines. Other colors that look great on hazel eyes are purples, lavenders, and steel blue or navy blue. (These colors will make the green in your eyes pop) For eye liner, use black, dark brown or steel blue with the neutral look or choose purple or navy for a more dramatic look. You could also still use your pink eye shadow but, just add a bit of copper or purple to the outside corner, blend it in and add your black eye liner. For your rosy cheeks, just tone them down a bit with a translucent face powder then use a neutral or bronzy colored powder blush lightly over it. Be sure to pat in your powder with the pad and lightly brush away any excess with a powder brush then use a good thick blush brush to pat on your blush. Finally, just use a wedge shaped makeup sponge to lightly smooth it all out. This will definitely tone down your look and give you a more sophisticated look, too! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have hazel eyes (which are fairly close together), brown hair, rosy cheeks and a roundish face. I have been using a shimmery pink eyeshadow with black eyeliner and mascara but I want a softer, yet more sophisticated look. What can I do? I look like I wear too much blush when really my rosy cheeks are just my natural complexion so I can never wear blush to accent my cheekbones. Any advice?
MAKEUP question from Zena
Hi Zena, For your coloring, the best choice for a classic look is to use brown or neutral colors on your eyes and a true red on your lips. If you aren't used to red lipstick, give it a try and give yourself some time to adjust. It can really be a shocking change but, this is a great look that is always "in". Or if you want to "play up" your eyes, go with purples, lavenders, coppers - these colors will make your eyes appear more green or blue depending on what you choose. If you are going more dramatic on the eyes, go more neutral and natural on the lips like a smoky rose or burgundy color. Good luck and I hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
hi ive got dirty blonde hair and blue-grey eyes. what colours are best for me?
MAKEUP question from Amanda
Hi Amanda, Oh, how much fun you are going to have now that you are using makeup! For your coloring I would use browns and neutral colors for the eyes and peachy or red colors on your lips to brighten up your face. The brown eye shadows will really make the blue in your eyes show up. If you dare, try a true red (not too orange and not too blue) on your lips. Go easy on the eye shadow if you choose to go red on your lips. Maybe even just a dark brown eye liner and lots of mascara for this look. Check out our eye shadow pages for some application tips. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Hi, I'm Amanda, and I am totally new in the makeup department. See, I just started experiencing makeup a few days ago, but don't know anything. I'm a light blonde haired girl, with fair skin and blue eyes. Do you know any good products and colors that go with these features? Thank You, Amanda
MAKEUP question from Shelby
Hi Shelby, You are doing the right thing if you wear bold colors/jewelry by keeping your makeup simple. However, you could add some neutral colors or pastels to your eyes in the form of eye shadows and/or you could wear a bold eye liner color. Another way to brighten up your face while wearing bold colors but, still looking classy is to choose a true red (not too blue, not too orange) lipstick. Stay with black or dark brown eye liner and lots of mascara but, the red lipstick with your dark blond hair and greenish eyes will really look stunning. Use a neutral peach blush that is not too orange or too bright. Red will bring out the color in your eyes as well as, make your teeth look whiter and brighten up you whole face! If you are wearing more neutral clothes, go with purple (brings out the green in your eyes) or green eye shadows over the whole lid but, not above the crease with a black eye liner. (Red lipstick is still good with this look, too.) Good luck and I hope this helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Hi, I have light brown/dark blond hair and dark green eyes. I wear a lot of bold styles and colors for clothes and jewelry (but nothing too crazy) and I want to do the same for my makeup, but I don't want to look stupid. Right now I just put eyeliner on my eyelid and mascara. What do you suggest.
Makeup question from Deborah
Hi Deborah, There are several things to try for this common problem. It is usually due to a mid-day shine or a little (or a lot) of oil secretions. You could try using the oil-blotting papers a couple of times a day. If you are using a liquid make-up, you could try a mineral make-up powder. Lastly, if you are using a liquid, try oil-free, and make sure to follow with a translucent powder that you are patting on with the pad and brushing off any excess with a large powder brush. Thanks for writing in! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
My make up always looks as if its rubbed off by the end of the day, but when i wash my face the make up washes off. What should i do to make my make up look fresh as i did that morning?
Makeup question from Cheyanne
Hi Cheyanne,
Thanks for writing in. I would recommend that you try a mineral makeup powder. For areas that need more coverage, you simply use a concealer brush with the makeup and layer the powder until you have the desired coverage. Usually, if your concealer or makeup is turning orange, it is due to oil-secretions. Another idea is to try using oil blotting papers during the day to blot the excess oil or a translucent powder several times a day to keep the fresh look all day. Good luck and I hope that helps you out!

MY QUESTION:
Ok i have a real problem with putting on cover up with out it looking orange or u can really tell i have it on. What can i do to make it have a clean finish not look orange? Also i have a few pimples here in there what is the best make up to use to hide that best?
MAKEUP question from Diane
Hi Diane, Thanks for writing in! For a classy look with dark hair and eyes, and skin that tans easily, I would focus either highlighting your lips or eyes. You should choose which area of the face you think is your best feature. But first, start with a good skin care regimen and follow with an appropriate foundation depending on your skin type. If your skin is very dry, I recommend a cream or liquid foundation. If you have combination or oily skin, I love the look and the ease of a mineral powder makeup. For great skin that needs minimal coverage, a tinted moisturizer is perfect. Always follow with a translucent powder (unless you are using a mineral makeup powder)to seal in the moisture. Pat on the powder with the pad and brush off with a powder brush. If you are using a powder blush, apply after your face powder and blend with a sponge. If you are using a cream blush, then apply and blend before you apply your face powder or mineral makeup powder. The best colors for your eyes for a daily classy look would be using a neutral brownish palate. For an updated dramatic look, especially to brighten up the dark eyes and hair, use a really bright turquoise, blue or green and just sweep across the lid only not going above the crease line. Finish off with a thin line in dark brown or black eye liner as close to the lash line as possible. Other great colors for you to accent the eye area are purple, burgundy even gold for a really dramatic look. The "trick" or key is not too much of these wild colors - use them only in the outer corner or sweep a line across the lid as described above. The colors to avoid would be anything with an orange tint. For lips, if you are using the daily neutral palate, go with a true red or bluish red color. If you are using the more dramatic colors, go with a more neutral color on the lips such as a gloss in a pinkish tint. Have fun! Teresa
Hi. I'm 40, but am told I don't look it. I am reentering the makeup 'game,' and would like to look good, without looking 20. I have dark eyes, and dark hair, and skin that tans easily. A bit of direction would be great. Help?!?
MAKEUP question from Lisa
Hi Lisa, Great questions! I'll go in order that you asked. Concealer is applied before foundation by using the ring finger to pat it on, follow with any form of foundation making sure not to drag the pad, brush or fingers over the concealer thus, streaking it. Instead pat on foundation over the concealer carefully then, pat over both concealer and foundation with powder to seal it all in. Next, I usually apply eye shadow before eye liner as the shadow may cover up the liner or smudge it. To prevent damage to eyelashes, use the curler before the last step which is mascara. Thank you, Lisa. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
What is the correct order of application for makeup? Concealer then foundation? Eyeshadow then eyeliner? Eyeliner then mascara? Mascara then eyelash curler?
MAKEUP question from Mari
Hi Mari, Cute! I love dimples, too. In general, just remember that light colors reflect light and bring out the area whereas, dark colors will have the appearance of resending the area. So, I'm thinking a little bronzer on the dimples could do the trick but, be sure to blend carefully with a sponge or powder brush and use a translucent powder over it to not look too clownish. Good luck and I hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have a question that is probably silly but I was blessed with dimples and I absolutely love them. I just wanted to know if there was any way I could make my dimples pop when I apply my makeup. Should I place a little bit of highlighter on them or apply a little bronzer? Thanks!
MAKEUP question from Zoe
Hi Zoe, Putting makeup on is very personal so, it really depends on the look you are going for and your skin type. You should always start with good skin care so, your "canvas" is in it's best condition for wearing makeup. If concealer is needed to camouflage redness or under eye problems, use a brush to apply it where needed and pat it on. Next, choose a foundation which can be liquid (medium coverage - matte or "glowing", dual finish powder (heavy coverage, usually matte), cream (heavy coverage, can be matte or "glowing"), mousse (shear coverage), tinted moisturizer (most shear with moisturizer - great for "perfect" skin), mineral makeup powder (light to heavy depending on application). If you are not using dual finish or mineral makeup powder, pat on a translucent powder, then sweep off the excess with a powder brush. This sets the foundation. I usually apply blush next to the apple (cheekbone) of the cheek only and I like to use a neutral color that goes with any shade of lipstick or eye shadow. After that, I take on the eyes (check out our eye shadow pages for some great tips). Lastly, the lip liner and lipstick. If you want to make your lips larger, line the outside and for making them look smaller, go just inside the lip line. Lastly, apply lipstick with a brush blending it with the liner to avoid the two tone look. Of if you want a more sheer look, just use a nice gloss, with or without a liner. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
How do i put make-up on?
MAKEUP question from Lydia
Hi Lydia, For makeup the Boho Indie-style, you need to think "au naturale" So, not much makeup maybe a sheer tinted moisturizer or mineral makeup powder for the face. Minimal neutral eye shadows, if any. Definitely, the black or dark brown eye liner and lots of mascara. For lips, do line your lips with a natural or nude lip liner and fill in with a natural lip gloss. However, if you have very pale skin, brighten it up with a brighter shade of lip gloss. I hope that helps. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
I have small brown eyes and want an indie, boho look. It seems like everything I do isn't quite.. my style or doesn't look right. I'm sick of wearing too much makeup but I have to always wear some. Help?!
MAKEUP question from Shelby
Hi Shelby, First you have to have your parent's permission. Next, I would go with lip gloss and a little eye shadow in a neutral color like copper or light brown if you have light eyes and hair, pastel blue or purple if you have dark hair and eyes. Use a little brown or dark brown mascara. A little blush in a neutral rose color (think pink w/ brown mixed in) is perfect for all skin tones colors. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Teresa
MY QUESTION:
what is the best type of makeup a 14 year old can wear without looking over done and a lot older then i really am?
MAKEUP question from Missy
Hi Missy, Let's see...."bold but, not trashy". I can recommend a couple of things to try. First, make sure your eye liner is not too thick and harsh. When you apply it, start at the outside of the eye and work your way across to the inside by making little dots and dashes then, use an eye liner smudge brush to join the dots and dashes. This way you have a smoky look rather than a hard line across the eye. With liquid eye liner, start at the outside and work your way across by overlapping the lines instead of trying to make one swoop across the lid. Another no no is to use a different darker colored lip pencil than your lip stick. Instead use a neutral or matching liner to your lipstick. Lastly, I'll recommend that when you buy foundation, try a minimum of three shades on your cheek and go outside to a natural light to see which matches best. (Don't color correct with foundation. For example if you have yellowish skin tone don't offset the yellow with pink foundation. I instead match it and color correct with powder. Pink powder to offset yellow, green to offset redness, pink or peach to give a glow and so on.....) Hope these ideas will help! Teresa
MY QUESTION:
Well i want my makeup to be bold but not trashy because when i get in bright light it's like i'm not wearing makeup at all
